What is a Polytechnic?
Polytechnic institutions are career-focused undergraduate and graduate universities that combine applied learning with a liberal arts education.
History and Significance
UW-Stout was given our designation as “Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University” in 2007 by the UW Board of Regents. This designation is only applicable to about 3% of universities in the U.S. and includes other highly respected polytechnic peers such as Cal Poly, Michigan Tech, and MIT.
UW-Stout featured at 2018 Polytechnic Summit
The Polytechnic Summit 2018 (PS2018) was held from June 4 to 6 at the University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) in Lima, Peru. This event gathered around 150 participants among academics and professionals, from the world of education and representatives of the industry, interested in transforming higher education so that it is more in tune with the requirements and challenges of a labor market marked by exponential technologies in the age of knowledge.
The Polytechnic Summit presented the innovative approaches used by avant-garde universities and technical and polytechnic institutes around the world to provide active learning environments, promote student-centered teaching and educational innovation. Also, this year, the event focused on four thematic areas: (1) Implications and challenges of higher education in the digital era; (2) Collaboration between industry and academia; (3) Applied research and; (4) Design, innovation and trans-disciplinarity.
Patrick Guilfoile, provost of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, together with Glendalí Rodríguez, associate provost of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, closed the event by showing their institution's approach to providing an education of the 21st century and received the post of part of UTEC, since they will host the next edition of the event, to be held from June 3 to 5, 2019.
