Every year hundreds of families visit our campus to experience the amazing talent of our students and to spend quality time with family. Take part in our family fun run/walk, laugh with our comedian or watch students strut their stuff on the runway at the Fashion without Fabric fashion show. Whatever you choose, we hope you’ll make the visit to Menomonie to see what our Stout family is all about!

Pre-Family Weekend Events | Thursday

Evening of Music from Asia with Kenji Haba (guitar) and Jerry Hui (voice)
Thursday, April 5, 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Location | The Duke & Dagger, 120 6th Avenue

Sponsored by | Department of Communication Studies, Global Languages, and Performing Arts

Guitarist Kenji Haba (with guest Jerry Hui, baritone/countertenor) presents a recital of music from Asia and beyond. A variety of genres — classical, jazz, and animé themes — by Jean Absil, John Dowland, Tan Dun, Dai Fujikura, Joe Hisaishi, Jerry Hui, Kaito Nakahori, and Toru Takemitsu.

This event at the Duke and Dagger will also feature a mini art show of works by students who studied abroad with UW-Stout’s Masako Onodera, as well as a live comic booth with the UW-Stout Comic Creators.

Guided Tours of the Mabel Tainter Center For the Arts
Location | 205 Main Street East, Menomonie

Visit the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts for a FREE guided tour of what CNN Travel has called "One of the 15 most spectacular theaters in the WORLD!" Tours will be held at the top and bottom of the hour with the last tour leaving at 2:30 pm.

Ceramics and Art Sale
Location | Memorial Student Center, Lower Level

Would you like to support local emerging artists? The Fine Arts Association, a student-run organization, will be hosting a sale. There will be an array of student work that consists of drawings, jewelry, paintings, prints, ceramics, pottery, and more!  Cash and checks are accepted.

Stout Secrets Tour ***Changed to be a presentation due to weather
Location | Ballroom B, Memorial Student Center

Have you ever wondered about the meaning behind pieces of public art on campus? Would you like to know more about UW-Stout’s outdoor skating rink and other features lost to time?

This 60 minute presentation will include interesting facts about campus and its history a lot of photos of how campus used to look.

Film Festival and Exhibition
Location | Memorial Student Center, Huff's Lounge

The 4:51 Short Film Festival invites students from across campus to participate in a juried film festival featuring original student-made film adaptations.  Each short film will be an adaptation of a published piece of literature (a portion of a short story, a scene from a play, a poem) by a foreign author (non-United States).  The length of each entry must be 4 minutes and 51 seconds or less. Stop by our red-carpet premiere to watch the top 3 films (1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place).

The Monsters, Movies & Mythology Exhibition will allow students in Dr. Joan Navarre’s Honors English class to share the results of their research on the influence of Classical Mythology on movie monsters and the ways that mythology shapes modern storytelling and, in turn, is shaped by contemporary culture.

GreenSense Plant Sale
Location | Memorial Student Center

GreenSense is Stout's sustainability organization, dedicated to facilitating environmental awareness and action. One way they do that is by providing students the opportunity to purchase unique house plants during our plant sales. Every plant sold is propagated and cared for in the UW-Stout Greenhouse. Only got a few bucks? No problem! Most of our plants sold for less than $5.

Beyond the Stage Art Exhibit
Location | Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts, 205 Main Street East

Stop by to discover around 60 works of student art featuring the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts as the subject matter. This is a collaboration with the School of Art & Design, The Furlong Gallery, Instructor Carey Dean, Dr. Joan Navarre, and the Mabel Tainter.

Big Fish – the musical
Location | Harvey Hall Theatre
Tickets | $12.00/adult, $6.00/child

Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed film directed by Tim Burton, BIG FISH tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest… and then some! Edward’s incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him.

Overflowing with heart, humor and BIG FISH is an extraordinary musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre – for an experience that’s richer, funnier and BIGGER than life itself. Tickets go on sale March 5th and can be purchased online, at the door, or at the Service Center.

Comedy Show | Andy Hendrickson
Location | Memorial Student Center, Great Hall

Sponsored by Blue Devil Productions, come by for a free comedy show to enjoy laughs with the entire family!  Andy Hendrickson is a comedian, writer and actor that built his career in New York City. Andy has a matter-of-fact sense of humor and specializes in highlighting life’s silly details. Andy has been seen on The Late Show with David Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.  Come out for some laughs and get ready to relate!

Fab Lab Tour
Location | 132 Applied Arts


The Fab Lab offers open access for students to utilize digital fabrication equipment and solve their challenges. The Fab Lab has five core technologies (laser engraver, vinyl cutter, 3D printer, CNC router and mini-mills) as well as additional digital fabrication equipment available for use. The tour will discuss the technologies and show examples of the processes.  Tour is limited to the first 75 people who register. Request a spot on the tour.

Bean Bag Tournament
Location | South Lawn, next to Memorial Student Center

Join the Men in Education and Aspiring Educators of Wisconsin student organizations for a bean bag tournament. Entry fee is $15 and each team must have one member who is a current Stout student or staff. Alumni are also welcome. All skill levels and experience are welcome. Teams are guaranteed 5 games. Pre-register your team to guarantee a spot. There is a limit of 16 teams and the first 16 paid teams will be eligible.  Entry fees can be dropped off to Todd Hayden, Heritage Hall 108.

Sensory Experience of Taste Testing Foods

It is a Taste Testing Experience to demonstrate a typical sensory taste test used in the food industry for new products, research and development or product development. This taste test also highlights an example of what students can experience in the Basic Sensory Course within the Food and Nutrition department.

Grab your parents and join the Stout Student Dietetic Association for Foodie Bingo! Compete for prizes in this food and nutrition themed spin on traditional Bingo.  Pre-registration encouraged but not required.

Blue Devil Amazing Race
Location| Check-in inside the Involvement Center

Sponsored by the Stout Events Society, race other students and families across south campus as you receive a series of clues and activities.  Get your first clue inside the Involvement Center anytime between 12-4 pm.  Prizes awarded to the fastest times and most points!

If you've ever thought about studying abroad or going on National Student Exchange, learn more with the entire family at one of our presentations! Learn about all your options, how to apply, costs, and important deadlines. Start thinking about studying abroad/away during Family Weekend.

Monster Drawing Rally
Location | Memorial Student Center, Huff’s Lounge

Sponsored by AIGA, join us for the 5th Annual Monster Drawing Rally! Watch as a variety of artists create mixed media artwork throughout two rounds. The Monster Drawing Rally is not necessarily about drawing monsters, although it could be. Each artist has complete freedom to create what they like with the materials of their choice. The unique pieces will be sold for $15 each. It is a great opportunity to gather an artistic community and indulge in the entertainment.

Fashion Without Fabric Show

Fashion Without Fabric has become a yearly sensation.  At the show, the audience can take pleasure in the atmosphere and entertainment of a fashion show unlike any other.  Stout’s own art and design students will employ creativity to produce unique fashions using anything and everything but fabric.  Tickets go on sale in March and can be purchased online, at the door, or at the Service CenterHurry, as they sell out quickly!
