UW-Stout’s B.S. Applied Social Science Social Studies Education Concentration prepares you for a teaching career inspiring students and teaching them to think critically, empathize with others, and become active and informed citizens. Build on your passion for history and social science and develop the skills in curriculum design, classroom management, and inclusive teaching practices needed for a rewarding career. Wisconsin needs licensed, caring teachers and our curriculum will prepare you with a rigorous and hands-on curriculum. You will be prepared for a license to teach history, civics, and social studies in grades 4-12.

Career-Defining Curriculum

Our Social Studies Education concentration combines hands-on professional training in education with a depth of knowledge in history, political science, civics, and the social and behavioral sciences. UW-Stout’s applied approach to using social science methods to address real-world problems will help you make these fields relevant and exciting in the classroom.

  • Integrated Approach to History and the Social & Behavioral Sciences: Learn to combine diverse perspectives to help students understand how the past shapes today’s society and how to connect ideas across subjects to think critically about important social issues.
  • Hands-On Teaching Experience: Gain real-world teaching experience in both middle and high school. Our curriculum provides strong preparation for licensure and will give you the skills and confidence to work in any classroom.

Professional Student Teaching Placements in Social Studies & History

The School of Education’s Office of Field Experiences will be there every step of the way to ensure that you have a meaningful student teaching experience. You will be placed in both middle and high schools and will work with professionals in the field to gain the experience and dispositions you need for licensure in grades 4-12.

In addition to a career in teaching, a degree in social sciences opens a range of other careers. You will have the option to add courses in research methods to your degree which will give you additional critical thinking and data analysis skills that are in demand by non-profits, government agencies, and businesses.
