Enamel Art Workshop

Explore color and pattern through high-heat fusion
In this Section

In this weekend workshop, participants will learn foundational techniques of vitreous enameling on copper, a process that fuses finely ground glass to metal through high heat. Demonstrations will cover the preparation, application, and firing of enamel to create colorful surfaces on sculptural copper forms. Students will have time for creative experimentation, exploring color and pattern through layered surface design. Upon completion, attendees will leave with a fundamental understanding of enameling processes, a series of completed small works, and the ability to continue independent experimentation. Participants will be guided by a UW-Stout expert instructor in the metals lab from Saturday through Sunday. All materials, as well as lunch and snacks on both days, are provided. Individual lodging in a campus dorm for one night is available for additional cost. Learn more about what you will gain during the workshop below, and register no later than May 16!

Who is your instructor?
Rose Schlemmer
Portriat photo of the instructor Rose Schlemmer
Commonly in her work, she uses vitreous enamel with overglaze techniques of china painting and image decals.  While working as an archivist, she digitized her family's 35mm film slides and 8mm film reels that are used for much of her decal work.  Other metalsmithing practices she often utilizes are hand-sawed metal, soldering, riveting, stone setting, hollow forming, and hand-fabricated closing devices.

In her research practices, she takes inspiration from interior design focusing on wallpaper, contemporary photography, ceramic glazing techniques, and historical to current enameling practices.

Currently, Rose Schlemmer is a Lecturer of Metals and Contemporary Art Jewelry and Foundations at University of Wisconsin Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Prior to teaching at UW Stout she was an adjunct professor at Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana. In addition to teaching at IU she spent 3 years as a digital  archivist of 8, 16, and 35mm films at Memnon archiving.  She received her BFA in 3D studio arts from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio and her MFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
