Mathematics Education Concentration

Teaching mathematics is a highly rewarding and challenging career.

If you are passionate about math and are considering teaching, this concentration within the Applied Math and Computer Science program will be a perfect fit for you.

The Wisconsin Education Association Council reports a shortage of mathematics teachers in the state, so there has never been a better time to consider this path.

The Mathematics Education program at UW-Stout prepares you for a career as a middle school or high school teacher. Within the Applied Math and Computer Science (AMCS) major, our concentrations will allow you to specialize in a particular area. Each of the concentrations within the AMCS has the same core courses in mathematics, computer science, and statistics; the Mathematics Education concentration then adds education coursework leading to licensure as a mathematics teacher.

The Mathematics Education concentration includes multiple classroom experiences, so you can experience a variety of classroom environments as early as possible. These experiences will help you determine what grade level and school setting are the best fit for you. One strength of the concentration system used by the AMCS major is that, if you decide not to pursue teaching, the core requirements for the concentrations are the same and switching is straightforward.

This program is a much more in-depth math program than many other math education programs and truly prepares students with the technical skills, as well as problem-solving and critical thinking skills, needed to be successful no matter what path they choose. Students pursuing Mathematics Education at UW-Stout complete all requirements leading to licensure as a mathematics teacher while completing a full Applied Math and Computer Science Major.

Computer science is infused throughout the Mathematics Education concentration by design. Mathematics teachers who graduate from UW-Stout have more computer science experience than many other teachers – and more opportunities because of this.

UW-Stout’s teacher education programs have reported consistently high employment rates. For more information about careers in mathematics education, browse the websites of professional and state organizations:

Note: This program is designed to meet the requirements for licensure in the State of Wisconsin. If you reside outside of Wisconsin, please note that UW-Stout cannot confirm whether this program (or course) meets requirements for professional licensure in your state. Students from other states will need to contact their state regarding licensure requirements. See the following website for additional information.
