How to Apply as an International Undergraduate Student

As an international student, UW-Stout offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in a transformative experience that goes beyond traditional academia. To guide you through the application process, we've prepared a comprehensive step-by-step guide tailored specifically for International Undergraduate and English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Our application guide is designed to provide you with detailed instructions, ensuring a seamless experience. Together, let's embark on an extraordinary academic adventure at UW-Stout.

To apply as an international undergraduate student, please complete the following steps:

1. Complete the Application
 
Note: Students who apply using the UW Application can submit their application for free to up to three Universities of Wisconsin schools. Students will be charged $25 by the Universities of Wisconsin for each additional.
2. Pay Required Fees

A $50 international undergraduate admissions processing fee is required prior to issuance of the initial I-20. Undergraduate applicants will receive a direct link to pay the Admissions Processing Fee after submission of the application.

3. Provide Evidence of English Proficiency Requirements

The English proficiency requirement may be waived for applicants from English-speaking countries. This will be determined by the Admissions Office after you have applied.

Ways to provide evidence of English proficiency:

  • Official TOEFL score: 
    • Minimum iBT (or MyBest) score of 70, or minimum paper-based score of 525.
  • Official IELTS score:
    • Minimum score of 6.0
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic)
    • Minimum score of 48
  • Duolingo English Test:
    • Minimum score of 110 overall (minimum sub/sectional scores of 90 or higher)
    • UW-Stout's ESLI reserves the right to require that students who submit Duolingo English Test scores:
      • complete additional testing conducted by the ESLI, and
      • enroll in additional ESL courses, as applicable.
  • Other:
    • Successful completion of UW-Stout's English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
    • Successful completion of an English language program affiliated with UW-Stout.
    • Graduate from a high school in the United States.
    • You have earned at least 15 transferable university-level credits from an accredited English medium-sized institution.
    • You have earned a grade of C or better in a course equivalent to UW-Stout's English 101: Composition 1.

4. Submit Declaration of Finances

Please submit a bank statement or letter certifying that either you or your sponsor has sufficient funds for full payment of expenses for one academic year at UW-Stout (no less than the US dollar amount required for undergraduate expenses).

5. Submit Academic Records

Please submit your academic records from all secondary and higher education institutions you've attended.

  • Send your academic records translated into English.
  • Include course descriptions for all courses you've completed at higher education institutions.

6. Review Admission Deadlines

How to Apply as an English as a Second Language (ESL) Student

If you are an English as a Second Language (ESL) student from outside the U.S. and interested in enrolling in one of UW-Stout's undergraduate majors, please submit the following:

4. Send Required English Language Test Scores

Admission to UW-Stout's English as a Second Language Institute does not require a minimum English proficiency test score. The scores obtained will be used to determine your course placement among our five ESL levels. Send one of the following official English proficiency test scores: 

  • IELTS
  • TOEFL
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English)
  • Duolingo

For students who haven't taken the ESL examinations mentioned above, affordable online options are available for your convenience.
