The Industrial Chemistry Concentration (B.S. in Applied Science) is grounded in chemistry with applications in the commercial sector and a theoretical chemical underpinning. You will learn how to apply principles of multiple chemistry disciplines to synthesize and characterize materials as well as develop scaled-up production methods.

Original Research Experiences

Your mentor-directed research will lay the groundwork for more application-oriented developments, as well as projects intended for future commercial implementation. This research reinforces your understanding of chemical principles imparted in the classroom and will prepare you for industrial employment after graduation. Your research may be disseminated through publications or conference presentations as preparation for graduate school.

Current Industrial Chemistry student research projects include:

  • Bio-inspired catalysis
  • Emulsion polymerization and surface chemistry characterization

Get your hands on high-tech instrumentation

You will learn to use and work with equipment and instrumentation not accessible to undergraduates elsewhere.

Instrumentation and Facilities

While collaborating with other institutions you will have access to supplementary techniques, in addition to networking with professionals in the field. These instruments are incorporated into the laboratories of several courses:

  • Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GCMS)
  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)
  • High Performance Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (HPLCMS)
  • Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX)

After Graduation Employment or Continuing Education

The coursework, hands-on laboratories, instrumentation training, and research experiences will prepare you to work and be productive in a variety of fields including:

  • Formulation/Process Chemists
