Workplace: Founded in 2005, the UW-Stout Writing Center is a learning center that supports student writers across campus: scholars from all majors, disciplines, and skill levels, at any stage of the writing or research process. The Writing Center provides free consultations with trained peer writing consultants who help with academic and professional communication projects. Each visit to the Center is confidential and will address clients’ individual needs and concerns. Tutors do not edit or proofread student papers but will work with students to develop skills, strategies, and confidence to improve their writing, research, and public speaking.Job Description: Peer writing consultants provide in-person and online consultations on academic and professional communication projects. The primary job activity features individual tutorial appointments with student clients.In addition to their individual tutoring hours, peer writing consultants are expected to attend staff training and orientation, staff meetings, and other professional development activities (all paid). Other work activities may include contributing to the Writing Center social media platforms; providing informational class visits to introduce our services to faculty and students; developing writing resources and tutoring materials; and providing general office support as needed. On occasion, the Writing Center facilitates and/or hosts writing workshops, and staff members may be invited to contribute to workshop planning or presentation. The Writing Center also collaborates with other student support offices and campus partners, such as University Housing, the University Library, the Advisement Center, the Involvement Center, and various Student Life organizations, as needed.Location: Shifts take place during regular business hours in the main office in 174 Harvey Hall. We also provide after-hours services on evenings and weekends; evening shifts take place online and/or in person at selected “satellite” locations in the residence halls and the campus library. Duration/Schedule: Peer writing consultants are hired each semester and usually work for the full academic year. Many of our staff members return for multiple semesters/years in the Writing Center.Staff members submit their available and preferred work times on a schedule form each semester; for the most part, you get to choose when and how often you work.Staff members have a set schedule each semester and typically work 6-8 hours per week (negotiable).The tutoring schedule is constructed each semester, based on staff availability. Typical opening hours are 9:00am-5:00pm on Monday-Thursday, 9:00am-3:00pm on Friday, and some after-hours services on selected weekday evenings and weekends, usually Sunday-Wednesday nights.Compensation: Starting salary is currently $10.00 per hour. We provide pay increases for returning staff members and offer paid training and professional development. Required Skills/Certification: Candidates must have completed the First-Year Composition sequence, including English 101 and English 102 or equivalent (a grade of "B" or higher is recommended). We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and fields.In addition to being strong writers and communicators, qualified applicants will have an interest in and/or experience with tutoring, consulting, mentoring, coaching, and/or collaborative learning.Strong interpersonal, intercultural, and customer service skills are also required.
