Please, direct GPS Program questions to Career Services: careerservices@uwstout.edu. This position will provide content creation to UW-Stout journalism professor Dr. Kate Roberts Edenborg. The position will require 3-5 hours a week. Students from any program can apply. Local Journalism Content Creator In fall 2024, the person in this position will work with the professor on developing local journalism content for the Dunn County and Menomonie community. The student will be expected to write at least 10 stories throughout the academic year. The student will have the opportunity to pitch their own ideas as well as their own ideas regarding the media format they use to share the story. This will help support community efforts to support/strengthen local news sources.In spring 2025, the student continues this work and also do outreach with readers and community members to learn what types of content the region still needs. The student will gain hands-on experience creating content on deadline, doing interviews, and developing story ideas and having it published and distributed.

Local Journalism Researcher In fall 2024, the person in the research position will work with the professor on local journalism initiatives. First the student will research and create a report that outlines initiatives that are taking place in Wisconsin and our local community. The student will help analyze survey data which provides insights about how lack of local news is affecting our community. This will help provide a framework to support/strengthen local news efforts. In spring 2025, the student will work with Dr. Edenborg to distribute the survey, collect data and provide presentations on the findings in the community. The student will gain hands-on experience working with a community around issues media literacy and local journalism. They might also discover strategies that could help support local journalism initiatives after researching the role local journalism plays and has played in our society.

They will have the opportunity to engage in most components of the research process, which will be beneficial to students in psychology who wish to gain applied learning/research experience that will be especially beneficial for students considering graduate-level training. Tasks include: Earning certification to work with human subjects Engaging in data collection Entering data from data collection Participating in data analysis Developing and submitting an abstract to a research conference Preparing a presentation for a research conference Presenting research at a research conference Hours: 3-5 hours/week Preferred Qualification: Preference will be given to psychology majors.
