Erik A. Evensen is Professor of Design and the founding program director for the B.F.A in Illustration. He has taught studio courses in illustration, design drawing, concept art, graphic design, and typography, and regularly serves as a graduate thesis advisor. He has been recognized with the university's Outstanding Teaching Award and Outstanding Research Mentor Award.
His academic research and creative practice sit at the intersection of visual communication disciplines, encompassing narrative and storytelling, culture studies, information visualization, and interactivity. His creative projects have been featured in The New York Times and The Washington Post, and received recognition from Communication Arts, Graphic Design USA, and the Paul Revere Awards for Graphic Excellence.
His comics industry credits include the independent graphic novels Gods of Asgard and The Beast of Wolfe's Bay, and the licensed series Ghostbusters and Back to the Future from IDW Publishing. His board game credits include “Distilled,” “Marrying Mr. Darcy,” “Class of ’89,” and their product lines. His ongoing creative work with myth and folklore frequently yields citations, appearances, and speaking engagements about history, culture, and comparative literature.
Erik holds an M.F.A. in Visual Communication Design from Ohio State University. He received a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of New Hampshire and continued his education at Boston's School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Prior to entering academia, he worked as a graphic designer and illustrator in New England with clients ranging from Fortune 50 companies through local small businesses and non-profits.
