An eclectic mix of music will be performed by UW-Stout’s Symphonic Band, including the last performance by 10 seniors, at its annual spring concert.

The concert is at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 22, in the Great Hall of the Memorial Student Center. Tickets are $5 and are available online at the Service Center in the Memorial Student Center, 715-232-1122, and at the door.

The band has been preparing works this semester that contrast traditional selections from the wind band repertoire with newer compositions and some lighter entertaining works, according to Director Aaron Durst.

Aaron Durst directs the Symphonic Band. The music will include selected movements from “Lincolnshire Posy” by Percy Grainger, “Galop” by Dmitri Shostakovich, “Ride” by Samuel Hazo and “Rest” from Frank Ticheli that represent old and new works by established composers for the wind band.

Newer works are “Swirling Prisms” by Brian Balmages and “Crossing the Bosporus” by Jukka Viitasaari. “Malagueña” by Ernesto Lecuona and “Doctor Who: Through Time and Space” arranged by Robert Buckley are included as lighter selections to entertain the audience as well as to demonstrate the band’s musical talents.

“There is really something for everyone on this concert,” Durst said, “whether you like to hear some old favorites, emerging works that will be around for a while or something that is just fun to listen to.”

The Tower Saxophone Quartet and the Cobalt Clarinet Quartet also will perform.

In addition, 10 band members who are graduating in May will be recognized. “We have a lot of talented musicians in the band, and it will be sad to see them go. I hope they will continue to make music in their future communities,” Durst said.

Graduating band members include:

  • Josh Bergman, of Reedsburg
  • Alex Buchholz, of Oshkosh
  • Kelley Burke, of Fitchburg
  • Emma Davis, of Janesville
  • Christian Gauvin, of Appleton
  • Ellie Jacobson, of Eden Prairie, Minn.
  • Kaelyn Lang, of Black River Falls
  • Daniel Michael, of Scandinavia
  • Benjamin Rohloff, of Cecil
  • Sam Welter, of Sussex

Tickets also are on sale for the 7 p.m., Saturday, April 28, Jazz from Harvey concert, featuring the Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Embers combo in Harvey Hall Theatre.
