Barneveld HS cars take first in Supermileage and Electrathon

Two cars from Barneveld High School topped the competition at the annual Supermileage and Electrathon competition hosted by University of Wisconsin-Stout students.

Two cars from Barneveld High School topped the competition at the annual Supermileage and Electrathon competition hosted by University of Wisconsin-Stout students.

Teams from seven high schools, with a total of 21 cars, competed Saturday, April 22, at the Menomonie Municipal Airport.

Barneveld car 94 won the supermileage competition, achieving 499 miles per gallon. Each car completed five laps on a three-quarter-mile course on a closed airport runway. Fuel efficiency was determined after they Cars from seven high schools competed.finished.

Barneveld car 99 won the electrathon, for cars with electric motors. The winner was based on the car that could do the most laps in an hour on a single electric charge. Car 99 covered 29.5 laps.

The cars were built by the high school students, who followed regulations from the Wisconsin Energy Efficient Vehicle Association.

Other schools competing were Bonduel, LakeView Technology Academy, New Auburn, Edgerton, Bowler and Lena.

The event was coordinated by students in UW-Stout’s Technology Engineering Education Collegiate Association, led by event director Zack Olsen, of Bonduel, TEECA president and a technology education major.

The day before the competition, cars underwent safety inspections at UW-Stout, including checking the roll cage, harness, brake lights and more. Braking and maneuverability tests also were held, with cars required to stop within 25 feet while traveling 15 mph, be able to turn within a 40-foot circle and complete a slalom course.

The cars were judged by UW-Stout instructors Barb Bauer and Kevin Dietsche.
