Mission Statement: The School of Art and Design is an artistic and intellectual community that fosters creative thinking and lifelong learning. We prepare individuals for leadership and professional careers in the areas of visual art and design. Our faculty guide aspiring artists and designers to build both theoretical and practical foundations, and encourage personal development in art, design, and the humanities.

School of Art and Design

Welcome to the School of Art and Design, a vibrant community of artists, designers, and scholars engaged in teaching and learning.

Our School, built on the strengths of the original Department of Art and Design, is comprised of two separate but interrelated departments: the Department of Art and Art History and the Department of Design. The School is a home for both of these Departments and is indeed a wonderful place to learn, create and thrive.

The strong relationship between art and design is the foundation for delivering highly creative and applied design experiences for students. Our graduates uphold UW-Stout's reputation for art and design leadership and research for studios, organizations, as well as many private and public companies. Although delineated by department in name, the school is dedicated to continuing the cross-disciplinary approach to art and design education that has helped us produce outstanding graduates.

Department of Art and Art History

Dedicated to excellence, the Department of Art and Art History is responsible for the foundational courses that all students need to gain the skills and historic knowledge needed so they can master both the fine arts and the design disciplines. Art metals, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and art history are housed within this department.

Department of Design

Pushing the cutting edge, the Department of Design includes majors in Graphic Design and Interactive Media, Industrial Design, Interior Design and Entertainment Design. These intensive courses of study shape students into future leaders in their chosen fields by giving them the expertise necessary to outshine the competition.
