Technical and Professional Communication
The Master of Science in Technical and Professional Communication (MSTPC) is a fully online degree designed for working professionals.
Two graduate-level professional development certificates are offered fall and spring. The certificate coursework is transferable into the MSTPC:
- Communicating with Emerging Media (fall semester, 6 credits, online)
- Improving the User Experience (spring semester, 6 credits, online)

Separately, email a 500-word statement that addresses your academic history, employment history and professional goals to the Certificate Program Director, Dr. Julie Watts (wattsj@uwstout.edu). Include a discussion of your expectations for online learning as well as examples of your readiness to participate in an online learning environment.
Program and Certificate Highlights
- Ten tenure-line faculty members specialize in rhetoric, composition, and technical and professional communication.
- The program and certificates include an engaging curriculum with courses in user-centered design, visual rhetoric, rhetorical theory, project management, communicating in multilingual environments, and speech communication.
- All students take advantage of UW-Stout's textbook rental service and do not pay extra for instructional resources.
- UW-Stout Career Services offers current students and alumni access to job preparation services.
- The Website Usability Testing Center includes a portable usability lab and eyetracking software.

Ethics Statement
The MSTPC program advocates the Society for Technical Communication's "Ethical Principles for Technical Communicators" and works to incorporate these principles into coursework discussions and practice.
