Collaborative Language Program

UW-Stout is proud to participate in the University of Wisconsin System Collaborative Language Program (CLP).
In this Section

The Collaborative Language Program (CLP) empowers you to explore languages. CLP faculty use cutting edge technology and blended-learning methodologies, to connect with other UW System campuses and offer classes in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, and Russian.

Each course received on campus is facilitated by a native language speaker and includes weekly tutoring sessions.

All courses are taught through a variety of blended and online approaches connecting Stout students with students from around WI. Some courses are taught in a traditional classroom setting that has been modified for interactive two-way videoconferencing (ITV). Our blended format includes the use of a variety of tools such as blogs, wikis, voice technology and webcams for further developing language proficiency. Through the use of this technology, CLP faculty work closely with students locally and on receiving campuses.

Top 3 Reasons to Learn World Languages

The demand for bilingual professionals is rising exponentially. U.S. job postings specifically geared toward bilingual candidates have more than doubled in the past decade.

Traveling as a speaker of the local language can revolutionize a trip abroad. While monolingual travelers are capable of visiting the same places, travelers who know more than one language are more easily able to navigate outside the tourist bubble and to connect and interact with the place and its people in a way that is often inaccessible to those without the language.

People who speak two or more languages have significantly better overall cognitive abilities than those who speak only one. This includes increased memory, improved problem-solving, critical thinking, and planning skills, as well as an improved ability to multi-task. Your brain is being challenged to switch between languages, as well as to receive input in multiple forms and negotiate meaning.
