Connie Smith
Safety and Compliance Officer
St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Shakopee, Minn.
The Risk Control program provided a foundation of knowledge that has been very beneficial to me in my role in safety and compliance at St. Francis. The skills I learned in regulatory compliance, policy writing, industrial hygiene, employee injury prevention, risk management, and research are used every day. Even though I didn't have a background in health care when I started this position, there was a very short learning curve as I applied what I knew to my responsibilities for what hospitals call the "Environment of Care". That environment focuses on Safety, Security, Fire Prevention, Hazardous Waste Management, Emergency Management, Clinical Equipment, and Utility Management. Oversite of these seven areas is challenging and dynamic. One recent project that I participated in was a 40 million dollar expansion to the hospital. The course work served me well again as I provided support to the construction process from a risk and safety perspective. St. Francis Regional Medical Center is one of 11 hospitals in the Allina Health System. It's very motivating to me to be part of a large system where I can influence improvement and results at all levels of the organization.
Mark Koetke, CSP
Director of Safety and Occupational Health
Minnesota Department of Corrections
St. Paul, Minn.
(My) position is responsible for management, development, and
consistent implementation of safety and health initiatives that improve
operational effectiveness and reduce costs for all department
facilities, field services offices, and ICWC/STS offender work crew
sites. This position supervises facility safety and health administrators
and directs safety activities of the department through education,
compliance, and injury reduction programs to help ensure a safe and
healthful environment for employees, offenders, and visitors. The
director serves as liaison with state regulatory agencies and advises
the commissioner and her executive team, institution heads, and other
department managers on policy matters, cost-saving measures, and system
improvements related to safety and health.
I analyze, plan, develop, and manage the safety and health system for the
Department of Corrections to ensure a safe working environment, promote
workplace safety practices, reduce/minimize/prevent accidents,
illnesses, injuries, human losses of all types and property damage,
losses and costs. I apply technical expertise and leadership skills for
the benefit of the DOC and the state as a whole by reducing the loss to
our limited human and capital resources.
The Risk Control program presents leadership of an organizations Safety
and Health function as a management science based on objective factors
that can be observed, measured and controlled. While governmental
regulations are a basic element of our business, optimizing the
performance of the systems within which an organization operates allows
for continued process improvement. The program teaches this concept
and equips students with proven tools to make safety systems more
effective in whatever industry they choose.
Kevin Kelley
Regional Safety Manager
Sears Holdings - Chicago
The educational and professional development-based guidance that I received as a result of completing UW-Stout's Risk Control program was excellent. This graduate-level program involved top-notch classroom and lab experiences and a practical real world internship which enabled myself and other alumni to be extremely marketable for the risk control profession.
As Regional Safety Manager for Sears Holdings, the various technical and managerial skills which were fostered by the M.S. Risk Control program consistently assist me to
prevent as well as reduce losses, thus adding to our company's bottom line. There is no doubt that UW-Stout prepared me with a solid technical base for rapid career advancement that I experienced in this highly dynamic field. I highly recommend this program to anyone who wishes to work with the entire strata of an organization for the purpose of managing the risks that are inherent to their processes!
