Course Description
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the scientific principles and concepts required to understand the interrelationships of natural systems and how humans can alter those systems.  In addition to lectures, this 4 credit course includes a weekly two hour lab and a one hour discussion period.  During these sessions, current issues related to human population growth, food production, waste production and disposal, biodiversity, forestry, wetlands, water use and pollution, global warming, ozone thinning, air pollution, nonrenewable and renewable energy sources will be examined.

Course Objectives:

§        Understand the processes of scientific investigation

§        Identify and describe major environmental challenges facing modern societies

§        Understand the cause and effect relationship between human attitudes and behavior and the environment

§        Examine solutions for resolving and/or preventing environmental problems

§        Develop and use critical thinking and problem solving skills

§        Develop an understanding of citizen science through water quality monitoring

§        Understand the importance of community service

Required Lab Manual- you already paid for your lab manual with a course fee; you will receive your copy during lab.
 

Instructor's Expectations

Students will:

1. Arrive to class on time.  

2. Attend all class meetings. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of all lab periods and will be an important factor in
    determining your final grade for the course.  

3. Take notes in class and review notes after class.

4. Study regularly each week. Two hours study time for each hour of class is recommended.

5. Work actively in lab groups

6. Ask questions and/or seek assistance from the instructor when concepts are unclear or  there is any problem regarding the class. 
    The tutor center is also a great resource for students who need some "extra" help. It is located in the Advisement Center in Room 11
    Bowman Hall (232-1465)

7. Read assigned pages in text and manual.

8.  If you are seriously ill or have a family emergency you MUST FIRST contact the office of the Dean of Students at 232-1181.  They will then
     notify me of your situation. That is the ONLY way  you will be allowed to take a make-up exam.

Grading Policy

GRADES will be determined by percentage of possible points earned at the end of the semester. 

Based on a total of 530 points possible by the end of the semester, grades will be given as follows:  Add your total points, divide by the possible total (555), multiply that number by 100.  Example:  A student earned a total of 452 points out of a possible 530 points by the end of the semester: 452 /530= .85x100= 85%= B.

Below 60% is not passing
