Wade, Larson take top individual awards

MENOMONIE (May 8, 2008) - Thrower Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) was named the UW-Stout men's field athlete of the year, while sprinter Kendall Wade (So, Milwaukee/Bayview) garnered the track athlete of the year laurels.

Larson advanced to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 35-lb weight throw and has provisionally qualified to the outdoor championships in the discus and the hammer throw, an event he set the school record.

Larson broke the school record in the hammer in early April at the UW-River Falls meet, adding more than two feet to the mark when he recorded a mark of 176-feet, 8-inches. Larson was the runner-up at the outdoor conference meet in the discus.

Wade dabbled in the majority of the shorter sprints and relays, and also participated in the high jump and long jump throughout the season. Wade scored in the 200-meter dash and the high jump at both the indoor and outdoor WIAC meets and, if every meet had been scored individually, would have scored points in all of the meets that he participated in. Wade also received the outstanding performance award for the sophomore class.

Bob Schmitz (Sr, Wells, Minn) received the senior class award, Eric Wheeler (Jr, Monroe) the junior class award and Daniel Drewek (Fr, Athens) the freshman class award.

Joe Newgren (Jr, Lakeville, Minn) received the Tim Faber Coaches Award, an award that recognizes an individual that is a key component to the success, the moral, the work ethic and the all-around attitude of the team.

Captains awards went to: Newgren, Schmitz, Andrew Berlin (Jr, Shell Lake), and David Schonscheck (Sr, Omro). Captains for the 2009 season are Berlin, Dan Strong (Jr, Lantana, Fla), Ryan Tellock (Jr, Oshkosh) and Blaine Lee (So, Mondovi).

Larson takes runner up at WIAC championships

EAU CLAIRE (May 3, 2008) - UW-Stout's Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) finished second in the discus to lead the Blue Devils at the 2008 WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at UW-Eau Claire.

Larson threw the plate a season-best 164-feet, 11-inches and reach an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying distance.

Eric Wheeler (Jr, Monroe) was third in the 110-hurdles (15.06) and ninth in the 400-hurdles (55.94). Kendall Wade (So, Milwaukee) scored in three events, placing seventh in the high jump (6-2.25) and 200-meter dash (22.53) and ninth in the 100-meter dash (11.14). The 4x100-relay team placed fourth (42.38).

As a team, Stout placed eighth.

Daniel Drewek captures WIAC pole vault title

EAU CLAIRE (May 2, 2008) - UW-Stout freshman Daniel Drewek (Athens) won the pole vault championship at the 2008 WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at UW-Eau Claire.

Drewek won the event with a leap of 16-feet, 00.75-inches, tying UW-La Crosse's Alex Tapplin, but winning the event on fewest misses.

Tim Lamkin (Fr, Somerset) was fifth in the javelin (147-9).

Kendall Wade (So, Milwaukee) finished second in the preliminaries of the 200-meter (21.90) and Eric Wheeler (Jr, Monroe) was third in the preliminaries of the 110-hurdles (15.01) and fifth in the 400-hurdles (55.43).

As a team, Stout was seventh after the first day of competition.

Sprinters compete well in wind

OSHKOSH (April 26, 2008) - Kendall Wade (Jr, Milwaukee), Dan Strong (Jr, Lantana, Fla) and Sam Flood (Fr, Eden) had strong finishes in the short sprints as UW-Stout competed at the cold and windy UW-Oshkosh Titan Invitational Saturday.

Wade was first in the 200-meter dash (21.88-seconds), while Strong was second (22.39) and Flood fifth (22.74). In the 100-meter, Wade was second (11.01), Strong third (11.18) and Flood fifth (11.27).

Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) captured the top distance in the discus (156-feet, 6-inches) as Stout finished third as a team.

Stout will be at the WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 2-3 at UW-Eau Claire.

Drewek repeats as WIAC field athlete of the week

MENOMONIE (April 22, 2008) - For the second time this semester, UW-Stout freshman pole vaulter Daniel Drewek (Athens) was named the WIAC field athlete of the week.

Drewek finished first in the pole vault with a height of 16-0 1/2 at the Phil Esten Challenge on April 18.  His mark provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Division III Championship and ranks as the second-best in the conference and 10th-highest in the NCAA Division III this season.

Drewek was the WIAC athlete of the week in January during the indoor season when he cleared 15-feet, 6.50 inches.

Four compete at St. John's Decathlon

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn (April 20, 2008) - Dillon McFarren (So, Spooner) led a quartet of UW-Stout competitors at the St. John's Decathlon, Sunday.

McFarren finished 10th with 4355 points. Joe Bons (Jr, Little Chute) was 11th (4044), Nate Schmitt (So, Janesville) 12th (3932) and Bill Stommell (Fr, Racine) 13th (3514).

Wheeler takes top four finishes at Phil Esten

LA CROSSE (April 18, 2008) - Eric Wheeler (So, Monroe) captured a first and fourth place finish in the hurdles on a wet, cool evening at the Phil Esten Challenge, Friday at UW-La Crosse.

Wheeler was first in the 110-hurdles in a time of 15.08-seconds, but clocked a 14.74 in the preliminaries of the event. Wheeler was fourth in the 400-hurdles (56.77).

Ryan Ament (Jr, Grand Meadow, Minn), Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) and Kody Zahtre (Fr, Black River Falls) finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the discus. Ament recorded a distance of 152-feet, 3-inches, while Larson had a mark of 149-4 and Zahtre a distance of 130-0.

Daniel Drewek (Fr, Athens) was first in the pole vault (16-0.50). Bryan Pennaz (Fr, White Bear Lake, Minn) was fourth in the event (14-6.75).

Kendall Wade (Jr, Milwaukee) had a pair of top four finishes, placing third in the 200-meter dash (22.52) and fourth in the 100 (11.02). Peter Johnston (Fr, Madison) was fourth in the 5000-meter run (15:49.77) and Blaine Lee (So, Mondovi) was third in the long jump (20-5). The 4x100-meter relay team finished second (43.12), just one one-hundredth of a second off the pace.

As a team, Stout placed third of seven teams. Stout will be at the Kip Janvrin Invitational, Friday, April 25 in Indianola, Iowa.

Larson breaks hammer record, reaches provos

RIVER FALLS (April 5, 2008) - Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) broke the UW-Stout hammer throw record and reached NCAA Division III provisional qualifying marks in two events Saturday at the UW-River Falls Falcon Invite.

Larson paced all collegiate entries in the hammer throw where he finished second to unattached Jon Dahlin. Larson threw the hammer 176-feet, 8-inches to break the record of 174-7 set by Jason Lehman in 1998.

Larson also reached a provisional qualifying mark in the discus, tossing the plate 150-10 to finish second behind teammate Ryan Ament (Jr, Grand Meadow, Minn) who won the event with a distance of 152-6.

Kendall Wade (Jr, Milwaukee) was part of a trio of first place finishes, winning the 200-meter dash (22.97 seconds) and was a member of the 4x100-relay team (43.09). Wade won the long jump with a leap of 21-10.25. Wade was second in the 100-meter dash (11.66) and the high jump (6-2.75).

Daniel Drewek (Fr, Athens) won the pole vault with a provisional qualifying height of 16-feet. The Blue Devils took the top four spots in the pole vault. Adam Kloss (So, Whitehall) was second (13-11.25), Jack Martenson (Fr, Ashland) third (13-5.25) and Bryan Pennaz (Fr, White Bear Lake, Minn) fourth (13-5.25).

David Schonscheck (Sr, Omro), who did not compete during the indoor season, won the 1500-meter run with a time of 4-minutes, 10.57-seconds. Blaine Lee (So, Mondovi) won the triple jump (41-7.25), and was fourth in the long jump (20-10.75). Sam Flood (Fr, Eden) was third in in the long jump (21-0.75).

Eric Wheeler (So, Monroe) was second in the 110-hurdles (16.13).

No team scores were kept. Stout will be at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational, Saturday, April 12.

Drewek wins pole vault at Wash U Invite

ST. LOUIS, Mo (March 29, 2008) - After showing promise early in the indoor season, Daniel Drewek (Fr, Athens) suffered an injury that kept him out the rest of the indoor season.

Drewek came back for the first outdoor meet of the season and won the pole vault at the Washington University Invitational Saturday. Drewek, who had qualified provisionally to the indoor national meet, paced the field with a mark of 15-feet, 5-inches.

Eric Wheeler (So, Monroe) was second in the 400-hurdles (56.93 second) and Nate Carey (So, Champlin Park, Minn) was second in the 10,000-meter run (32:19.49). David Schonscheck (Sr, Omro), who also sat out the indoor season, was third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:07.44).

In the discus, Ryan Ament (Jr, Grand Meadow, Minn) and Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) finished second and third, respectively. Ament tossed the plate 167-6 and Larson, 151-5.

As a team, Stout finished third of 15 teams. The Blue Devils will be at the UW-River Falls Invitational Saturday, April 5.

Sean Larson places 11th at national meet

ADA, Ohio (March 14, 2008) - UW-Stout's Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) placed 11th at the 2008 NCAA Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships at Ohio Northern University Friday.

Larson tossed the 35-lb weight 55-feet, 1-inch in his first national meet. Noah Gauthier of Bates College won the event with a mark of 63-1.50.

MENOMONIE (March 11, 2008) - UW-Stout Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) will compete at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, Friday, March 14 at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.

Larson will compete in the 35-lb weight throw. Larson is the 12th seeded thrower with a mark of 56-feet, 10.75-inches, a mark he set at the Stevens Point Pointer Last Chance meet. Larson is scheduled to compete Friday at 2:30 p.m.

STEVENS POINT (March 8, 2008) - UW-Stout competed in UW-Stevens Point's Last Chance meet, Saturday, placing 13th out of 19 teams.

Stout's Eric Wheeler (So, Monroe) placed fourth in the 55-hurdles with a time of 7.85. Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) placed third in the weight throw with a throw of 56-10.75. Two Blue Devils competed in the mile run. Clint Loker (Fr, Sussex) placed 11th (4:38.77) while Jordan Scholzen (Fr, Arpin) finished 12th (4:42.01).

The NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be March 14-15 at Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio.

Blue Devils compete at Whitewater last chance

WHITEWATER (March 7, 2008) - UW-Stout competed at the Karl Schlender Last Chance meet, Friday at UW-Whitewater.

Andrew Berlin (Jr, Shell Lake) placed 13th in the weight throw (47-11.75) and Eric Wheeler (So, Monroe) was fourth in the 55-hurdles (7.83). Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) also competed in the weight throw, with a mark of 52-0.50.

Stout will be at the Pointer Last Chance meet Saturday, March 8. The NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be March 14-15 at Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio.

Wheeler breaks school hurdle record

SUPERIOR (March 1, 2008) - Eric Wheeler (So, Monroe) broke the UW-Stout 55-meter hurdle record and finished second in the event at the 2008 WIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at UW-Superior.

Wheeler, who finished fourth in the preliminaries the day before, set a new school standard in the 55-hurdles with a time of 7.69 seconds, improving on his NCAA Division III provisional qualifying distance. Wheeler broke the record of 7.71 seconds shared by Dave Hanson in 2002 and Hall of Famer Dan Doucette in 1989.

Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) placed third in the 35-lb weight throw with a toss of 55-feet, 9.75-feet. Andrew Berlin (Jr, Shell Lake) scored in the event with an eighth place finish (51-9).

Kendall Wade (Jr, Milwaukee) matched his preliminary finish in the 200-meter dash, finishing fifth (22.79) in the finals. Wade also placed seventh in the high jump (6-3.25).

As a team, Stout placed seventh.

Wade has busy first day at indoor championships

SUPERIOR (February 29, 2008) - Kendall Wade (Jr, Milwaukee) had a busy first day for UW-Stout at the 2008 WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at UW-Superior, Friday.

Wade participated in three events, placing seventh in the long jump to score score two points with a season best leap of 21-feet, 11-inches, advancing to the finals with a fifth place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.70 seconds) and just missing advancing to the finals in the 55-meter dash (6.60 seconds) with a ninth place finish.

Eric Wheeler (So, Monroe) advanced to the finals in the 55-meter hurdles with a fourth place finish (7.86 seconds).

The distance medley team placed seventh to score Stout's other two points as the Blue Devils are currently eighth with four points. The meet will conclude, Saturday, March 1.

Larson improves on provisional mark

STEVENS POINT (February 23, 2008) - Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) placed third in the 35-lb weight throw and improved his NCAA provisional mark at the UW-Stevens Point Pointer Invitational Saturday.

Larson tossed the bag 56-feet, 4.50-inches, improving on a mark of 55-0.75 he set in the first home meet of the season in January.

Kendall Wade (Jr, Milwaukee) was fourth in the long jump (20-10.50) and Adam Kloss (So, Whitehall) was sixth in the pole vault (14-7.50).

Stout will be at the WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 29-March 1 at UW-Superior.

Wade wins 200, takes second in 55 dash

DULUTH, Minn (February 16, 2008) - Kendall Wade (Jr, Milwaukee) took a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash, and took the silver medal home in the 55-meter dash, Saturday, at the Lake Superior Challenge hosted by St. Scholastica.

Wade finished first in the 200 with a time of 22.6 seconds while Wendell Eskridge (Sr, Milwaukee) finished third at 23.20. In the 55 dash where Wade took second with a 6.59 time, Eskridge finished two places behind him again, taking fourth with a time of 6.67. Wade also finished third in the long jump when he set a mark of 20-11.75.

Blaine Lee (So, Mondovi) finished right behind Wade in the long jump with a jump of 20-07.75. Team captain Bob Schmitz (Sr, Wells, Minn) finished third in the 400 with a time of 52.13 seconds.

Mike Granke (Fr, Kohler) finished the 600 in 1:25.61, earning him a bronze. Peter Johnston (Fr, Madison) and Nate Carey (So, Champlin, Minn) took second and third, respectively, in the 5000 with times of 15:33.83 and 15:38.79.

Vinny Tuminello (Fr, Fall Creek) cleared a bar of 14-01.25 in the pole vault, earning him third place in the event.

Up next for Stout is the Snowshoe Open, hosted by University of Minnestota on Friday, Feb. 22.

Wade, Wheeler, Kloss take first at Border Battle

MENOMONIE (February 9, 2008) - Kendall Wade (Jr, Milwaukee), Eric Wheeler (So, Monroe) and Adam Kloss (So, Whithall) captured first place finishes as UW-Stout finished third at the Minnesota/Wisconsin Border Battle, Saturday at the Sports and Fitness Center.

Wade won the high jump with a mark of 6-feet, 4-inches. Kloss won the pole vault with a height of 14-6.25 and Wheeler won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.74 seconds.

Wade also had a third place finish in the 55-meter (6.61) and a second place finish in the long jump (21-9). Wendell Eskridge (Sr, Milwaukee) was third in the (23.20) and Bob Schmitz (Sr, Wells, Minn) took a third place in the 400-meter (52.27). Vinny Tuminello (Fr, Fall Creek) tied for second in the pole vault (14-0.50) and Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) was third in the weight throw (53-11.25).

Peter Johnston (Fr, Madison) was second in the 3000-meter (9:01.55) and Nate Carey (So, Champlin, Minn) was third (9:07.71). Joey Merrill (So, Golden Valley, Minn) was third in the 5000-meter (16:39.84).

Stout will be at the Lake Superior Challenge hosted by St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., Saturday, Feb. 16.

Wade 2nd in high jump, 1st in 200 at Bowlus Open

MENOMONIE (February 2, 2008) - UW-Stout placed several competitors in the top four at the Warren Bowlus Open Saturday at the Sports and Fitness Center.

Kendall Wade (So, Milwaukee) was second in the high jump, his jump of 6-feet, 5-inches was the top high jump mark for a Stout competitor since the 2002 indoor season. Wade also finished first in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.86 seconds.

Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) was second in the 35-lb weight throw (54-1.25). Matt Kennedy (Jr, Waunakee) was second in the 3000-meter (9:22.16) and Clint Loker (Fr, Sussex) was third in the 3000 (9:39.31). Joey Merrill (So, Golden Valley, Minn) was second in the 5000 (16:52.92) and Josh B. Schmidt (So, Elkhart Lake) was third (17:04.69).

Wendell Eskridge (Sr, Milwaukee) had a pair of the top four finishes, placing third in the 200-meter dash (23.28) and fourth in the 55 (6.69). Eric Wheeler (So, Monroe) finished third in the 55-hurdles (7.85). The 4x200-meter team took first (1:31.41).

Stout will host the Border Battle, Saturday, Feb. 9 at noon.

Sean Larson reaches provisional in weight throw

MENOMONIE (January 26, 2008) - UW-Stout's Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) reached an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark in the 35-lb weight throw at the UW-Stout Open Saturday.

Larson let go with a toss of 55-feet, 0.75-inches to place second behind former University of Wisconsin throw Kevin Becker, who was competing unattached and recorded a mark exceeding 67 feet.

The Blue Devils did well in the weight toss.Ryan Ament (Jr, Grand Meadow, Minn) was fourth (50-9.25) and Andrew Berlin (Jr, Shell Lake) placed fifth (49-8.25).

Mike Granke (Fr, Kohler) recorded a fourth place finish in the 800-meter (2-minutes, 00.40-seconds), Nate Carey (So, Champlin, Minn) was fifth in the 3000-meter (9:04.82), Bob Schmitz (Sr, Wells, Minn) was fifth in the 400 (52.66) Vinny Tuminello (Fr, Fall Creek) was third in the pole vault (13-9) and Ament was fourth in the shot put (45-9.25).

MENOMONIE (January 15, 2008) - UW-Stout freshman pole vaulter Daniel Drewek (Athens) reached a provisional qualifying distance in his first collegiate meet and was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) field athlete of the week.

Drewek soared to a height of 15-feet, 6.25-inches to place fifth at the Northwest Open at the University of Minnesota January 12.

Drewek last spring won the Wisconsin high school Division 3 title with a state record mark of 15-1, which would have won first place in all three divisions.

Freshman Drewek reaches provisional in first meet

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn (January 12, 2008) - UW-Stout freshman pole vaulter Daniel Drewek (Athens) reached a provisional qualifying distance in placing fifth in the event at the Northwest Open at the University of Minnesota Saturday. It was the first indoor track meet of the season.

Drewek cleared a height of 15-feet, 6.25-inches, and just missed at 16-2. Drewek last spring won the Wisconsin high school Division 3 title with a state record mark of 15-1. Drewek's state meet height would have won both Division 1 and Division 2.

Eric Cieslak (So, Rochester, Minn) finished second in the long jump (21-8). Sean Larson (Jr, Ellsworth) was fifth in the weight throw (50-5.5) and Bob Schmitz (Sr, Wells, Minn) was fifth in the 400-meter dash (52.57 seconds).

Gonzenbach, Kawski achieve 2007 top team awards

MENOMONIE (May 30, 2007) - Ryan Kawski (Sr, Stevens Point/SPASH) and Derek Gonzenbach (Sr, Milbank, SD) received the top individual team awards for the UW-Stout men's track and field team, coach Josh Buchholtz announced recently.

Kawski was the recipient of the field performer of the year award, while Gonzenbach carried away the track performer of the year award. Both were team captains this season.

Kawski qualified to the NCAA Division III indoor and outdoor track and field championships this spring. Kawski earned All-America honors during the indoor championship in placing seventh in the 35-lb weight throw. In qualifying to the meet, Kawski broke his own school record in the event. Kawski qualified to the outdoor championships in the discus and the hammer throw. Kawski finished fifth at the WIAC outdoor championships when he broke the school record in the event.

Gonzenbach qualified to the NCAA outdoor championships for the second consecutive year in the 400-hurdles. Gonzenbach finished second in the 400-hurdles at the WIAC outdoor championships and posted one of the top times in the country in the event.

The Blue Devils recognize most valuable performers by class. Gonzenbach earned the senior class MVP. Sprinter Bob Schmitz (Jr, Wells, Minn/United South Central) was the junior class MVP, thrower Sean Larson (So, Ellsworth) was the sophomore class MVP and distance runner Kirk Merrill (Fr, Florence) was the freshman class MVP.

Sprinter Dan Strong (So, Lantan, Fla/Santaluces) was named the most improved performer and Schmitz received the Tim Faber Award, an award that recognizes leadership and work ethic, both on and off the track.

Throughout the course of the indoor and outdoor seasons, Blue Devil performers marked 11 NCAA Division III qualifying marks and earned 32 WIAC medals. In addition to Kawski's two school record performances, Ryan Carpenter (Sr, Sauk City/Sauk Prairie) broke a 20-plus year old school record in the outdoor triple jump. Carpenter, the third team captain, also advanced to the NCAA Division III outdoor championships with the mark. Four performers - Kawski, Gonzenbach, Larson and Eric Cieslek (Fr, Rochester, Minn/Marshall) - hit NCAA indoor qualifying marks and six performers - Kawski, Gonzenbach, Carpenter, Cieslak, Ryan Ament (So, Grand Meadow, Minn/Stewartville), and Eric Washington (Fr, Milwaukee/Custer) - hit NCAA outdoor qualifying marks.

Schmitz will head up the 2008 team captains, along with Andrew Berlin (So, Shell Lake), David Schonscheck (Jr, Omro/Winneconne) and Joe Newgren (Jr, Lakeville, Minn).
