What is STEPS for Girls?

Science, Technology and Engineering Preview Summer (STEPS) at UW-Stout is a five-day summer camp for girls between their 6th and 7th grades in school.

STEPS offers an introduction to the exciting world of science, technology and engineering:

  • Hands-on experience with high-tech equipment and processes
  • Outstanding professors from the engineering, technology and science programs
  • Recreational and developmental activities such as bowling, swimming, a pizza and karaoke party
  • A ropes leadership and problem solving course

The week's activities include:

  • Analyzing, manufacturing and operating an obstacle-avoiding robot
  • Hands-on sessions in science and math
  • Creation of multimedia content articles about their experiences to share with family and peers

Please see the STEPS brochure for additional information [PDF].  Campers must have the consent of their parent or guardian to enroll. An interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is a plus but not required.

All four STEPS for Girls Camps for 2016 are full.  However, in case you are interested in another camp opportunity at Stout, we are now offering a one-week STEM Camp designed for girls and boys going into grades 8-10, the week of June 19th - 24th.  There are still openings for this summer’s first
offering of the camp and the coordinator has agreed to open it up to the young ladies whom we are unable to accommodate in the STEPS program.  It is important to note that the levels of math and science that will be taught at the STEM camp are designed for the 8th – 9th grades.  However, the model of the new camp and included activities will be quite similar to, and appropriate for your 7th grade daughter. If she is interested, please note that the registration can be completed at and The deadline is June 10th.
