Field Experience

Obtaining a Field Experience

  1. Attend Field Experience meeting held by the coordinator for Dietetic field experience, at least two semesters before you plan to enroll.

  2. Obtain a position or varied positions for a total of 320 hours. The position may be paid or unpaid. Supervisor must be a Registered Dietitian (R.D.). Students have completed field experiences at hospitals, public health offices, WIC clinics, diabetes camps and Camp Ronald McDonald.

  3. Most field experiences will require an affiliation agreement between the placement site and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Therefore, you must contact your field experience coordinator at least two months prior to the experience. The coordinator will contact Research Services to begin the process. You may not start the experience until the agreement is signed by both parties.

  4. Complete the field experience application (available in HE 202). Develop six outcome objectives related to your position(s) and the paper outline.

  5. Your field experience site’s policies and procedures may require liability insurance, background check(s), drug testing, proof of recent health check by MD, and immunizations. There may or may not be costs associated with these requirements, depending on the placement. It is the student’s responsibility to cover these costs.

Cost of liability insurance is approximately $24. Cost of background checks range from $20 to $45. Cost of drug testing is approximately $50. Immunization and physician exams will vary depending on insurance.

  6. Make an appointment with the coordinator for Dietetic Field Experience for the approval of your field experience and application. Bring drop/add cards to be signed by field experience coordinator and degree audit report.

  7. Register for 1 credit, course number FN-397E prior to beginning the work experience. Add card must be signed by field experience coordinator. Take add card to Registration and Records office.
