The Cognitive Science program will not accept new enrollments beyond the current semester. Students admitted before the completion of the Spring 2013 semester (May 15, 2013) will be able to complete the program as offered.

Cognitive science is the study of how the human mind/brain thinks through processes such as perception, memory, and reasoning -- and examines the interface of these cognitive processes with technology. In its application, cognitive science is concerned with the development of smart devices that extend and enhance human capacities.

Given the multidimensional nature of the mind and intelligence, cognitive science combines a number of disciplines in its investigation, including:

  • Philosophy
  • Psychology

The broadly based interdisciplinary approach will provide you with the type of flexible thinking and problem-solving abilities that are essential to serve the evolving technological needs of 21st century society. In addition, you’ll develop skills in effective communication, creative thinking, hypothesis generation, experimental design, data analysis and interpretation, mathematical and computer modeling, and statistical analysis.

Preparing For Stout


Preparation for a successful career begins in high school. Coursework in biology, computer science, linguistics, math, philosophy and psychology will give you the foundation you need to tackle undergraduate level coursework in this major.

Starting Out/As You Progress


This program will begin by introducing you to the interdisciplinary nature of cognitive science and its methods. You’ll take foundational courses in each of the relevant disciplines, and move on to advanced coursework that gives you a unified understanding of the mind and information systems. The introductory cognitive science courses and the higher-level research courses will be team taught and focus on developing an interdisciplinary and integrated understanding of cognitive science.

Professional Experiences


Preliminary and advanced coursework leads to applied research experiences and internship opportunities that give you real-world industry experiences before you even graduate. The practicum provides an opportunity to apply course work to solve practical problems encountered in the field of cognitive science, and gives you a competitive edge over other graduates.

Entry Positions


Occupational areas for graduates with a degree in cognitive science are projected to grow regionally (Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois) from a range of five to 51 percent and nationally from a range of seven percent to more than 21 percent for the years 2006–2016. UW-Stout’s B.S. in Cognitive Science is the first undergraduate cognitive science program in Wisconsin.
