Conference Scholarships

Update: 5.2.16 The scholarship application is now closed. Applications received by the final deadline (4/30/16) will be notified of award status the week of May 2nd.

Update: 4.19.16 Applications received by the secondary deadline will be notified of award status the week of April 25th. We appreciate your patience while we finalize some additional funding opportunities.

The priority deadline for the 2016 National Rural Institute is March 31, 2016.

After this date, the scholarship application will still be open until the final deadline. However, all applications will be wait listed and will be awarded on a case by case basis as funds permit.

Applications are for all scholarship opportunities and applicants do not need to submit more than one application.

Deanna Applehans Memorial Scholarship

The Deanna Applehans Memorial Scholarship fund was started in 2016 by an anonymous donor to honor the memory of Applehans, a longtime advocate, contributor and manager of the National Rural Institute through her position. Assistance includes full or partial conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals).

Michael E. Campbell Memorial Scholarship

The Michael E. Campbell Memorial Scholarship was established in March 2003, to honor Michael's personal and professional contributions to the alcohol and other drug abuse and mental health field. Two scholarships will be awarded. Scholarship covers conference registration only.

Cenpatico/Centene Corporation Scholarship

As a part of the conference sponsorship provided by the Cenpatico/Centene Corporation, a portion is used towards scholarships. Assistance may include full or partial conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals).

SAMHSA: Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT)

The mission of the SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Treatment is to promote community-based substance abuse treatment and recovery services for individuals and families in every community. As such each year funding is provided to support scholarship to attend the National Rural Institute. Assistance includes full conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals). As annual CSAT grant budgets allow, travel may or may not be included.

Harold E. Hughes Scholarship Fund

This perpetual scholarship fund has been established to provide ongoing recognition and honor of the contributions made to the alcohol and other drug abuse prevention and treatment field in the United States by Harold E. Hughes. Two scholarships are awarded at the end of the conference for the following year. Scholarship covers conference registration only.

Char Lusher Scholarship

This scholarship is provided by Char Lusher to help an individual with financial need to attend the institute. One scholarship will be awarded. Scholarship covers conference registration only. (Occasionally two partial scholarships will be awarded.)

Larry W. Monson Memorial Scholarship

This perpetual scholarship fund was established in memory of Larry Monson, co-founder of the National Rural Institute. It is awarded annually to a rural professional in the alcohol and drug abuse field who has made strong contributions to the institute. One scholarship will be awarded. Scholarship covers conference registration only.

National Rural Alcohol and Drug Abuse Network Scholarship (NRADAN)

These scholarships are provided by the National Rural Alcohol and Drug Abuse Network. NRADAN, Inc. will provide a limited number of scholarships annually. Assistance may include full or partial conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals). A travel stipend may also be awarded for travel expenses (as funds are available).

Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling: RIchard Stanchfield Memorial Scholarship

The Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling will provide a scholarship in memory of Richard Stanchfield. One scholarship will be awarded. Scholarship covers conference registration only for a gambling related Track.

Scaife Family Foundation Medical Scholar/Allied Health Professionals Scholarship

The Scaife Family Foundation of West Palm Beach, Florida, funds scholarships for medical students or Allied Health professionals interested in practicing in rural America and other addiction specific topics. Assistance includes full or partial conference registration, (which includes residence hall double room and on-campus meals). A stipend may also be awarded to scholarship recipients for travel expenses (on selected tracks only as there are funds available). Registration (Full and Partial) and  travel are available for selected tracks only as determined annually. Other tracks may be selected but are not eligible for travel reimbursement.
