FLASHbrief is the campus emergency notification tool.  Fb circle icon You should see this logo in the lower right hand corner of your computer screen. If you do not, download the software to receive emergency pop-up messages during critical incidents.

When should I call 911?

Staff have been reluctant to call 911 during  certain situations on campus. Don't be. Dial 911 for the following situations:

  • A fire alarm is sounding in a campus building. Don't assume someone else has called. Don't call the UWPD administrative line. 911 is the quickest, most reliable number.
  • When a staff or student is in need of medical attention. Even if you are not sure if they will need to go to the emergency room, call 911. The paramedics from Menomonie Fire/Rescue are highly trained to assess conditions in the field. The ambulance does not charge if they do not transport.
  • If you are aware of a crime in progress, call 911.

In all cases, be ready to give your location, phone number, an overview of the situation. You may be asked to stay on the phone until a dispatcher can radio the officer.

Access to campus buildings

In order to protect the security and safety of its students, faculty and staff, as well as its facilities, wrote UW Stout Administrative Procedure 010, "Campus Access Procedure".

This procedure was established to define responsibilities, ensure that people requesting access are appropriately authorized, develop a system of accountability and to identify appropriate internal controls. This procedure covers card access to exterior buildings and key control practices for internal access.

I'm concerned about a person's behavior/demeanor

UW Police have representation on the campuses Student/Staff of Concern (SOC) Assessment Team. This group has been meeting since 2000, but formalized after the tragedy at the Virginia Tech campus. The team consists of members from:

  • Dean of Students (chair)
  • University Police Chief
  • Counseling Center Director
  • Housing Associate Director
  • Student Health (resource)
  • Human Resources (resource)

The counseling center has created a succinct web page with resources and ideas on how to approach, document and report concerning behavior.
