Campus Security Alert - Sexual Assault
Tuesday, January 31
On Monday, January 30, 2017, the university was made aware of a sexual assault which occurred at approximately 5:45am on the same date. The incident occurred in a public area in or near the intersection of 6th Street East and 10th Avenue, near UW-Lot #24. In this case, the victim was approached, from behind, by one male assailant who threatened the victim and made unsolicited, non-consensual contact with the victim. The assailant has not been identified. If you have any information about this, or any crime, contact University Police at 715-232-2222, or you can submit an anonymous tip on the UW-Stout Police web page or through Dunn County Crime Stoppers, http://dunncocrimestoppers.com/. Keep in mind that sexual assault is never the fault of the victim. While there are no failsafe measures, here are some suggestions you may want to use to keep yourself safe. These are general safety tips to increase your personal safety, and the safety of others, and are NOT necessarily related to the recent report: If you have been sexually assaulted, tell someone. There are resources available to you. People who are incapacitated by alcohol or drugs cannot give consent. When walking at night, stay on well-lit pedestrian sidewalks, and be ready to call 911 if you are confronted or threatened. Practice being assertive about your boundaries. If saying NO or STOP is too hard, consider creating a diversion so you can leave. Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy or sense something is wrong, do what you can to get out of that situation, yell for help, or call for assistance. Be active in supporting a safe and respectful community. If you see others engaging in disrespectful or inappropriate actions, speak up and get involved, or contact someone else to assist. Use and encourage others to have a companion or a safe means of getting home, i.e., a trusted friend, or a taxi.
