Five students named winners in Best of Design show

Koua Xiong won Best of Show for Five student artists were honored in the annual Best of Design show at University of Wisconsin-Stout.

The show features works by School of Art and Design students in various disciplines. The exhibit runs through Thursday, April 18, at Gallery 209 in room 209 of the Applied Arts Building.

The Best of Show honor went to Koua Xiong, of Eau Claire, an entertainment design major. His entry, "Lolly in Floranda," is a nontraditional comic.

Other winners are:

  • Entertainment design: Duachaka Her, of Schofield, for "Wayfaring Stranger."
  • Industrial design: Ryan Enzler, of Rochester, Minn., for "Arthur USB Drive."
  • Interior design: Natalia Haywood, of St. Paul, for "ReNU."
  • Graphic design and interactive media: MatthewErickson, of Minneapolis, for "Timber Outdoors: Cloak Typeface Specimen."

The show drew 300 entries from 98 students, and 60 pieces were accepted for the exhibit.

The judges were design professionals: Steve Jokisch, from advertising agency Mono; Scott Smrstck, from furniture-maker Blu Dot; and John Standish, from Web developer Clockwork. Smrstck and Standish are UW-Stout alumni.

Exhibit coordinators are Professor Susan Hunt and Assistant Professor Vadim Gershman.
