Student construction team wins Minnesota quiz bowl

April 9, 2012

Four UW-Stout students worked their way to the peak of the Minnesota Construction Association Collegiate Quiz Bowl held recently at Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis.

The four, all construction majors and members of the honors group Sigma Lambda Chi, are: Matt Frey, of Stratford; Kris Ikeler, of Spring Green; Ken Lusian, of Hastings, Minn.; and Paul Mulligan, of Eau Claire.

They bested teams from the University of Minnesota, Minnesota State University Moorhead and Minnesota State University Mankato. UW-Stout won in all three rounds of competition, including by a score of 15-5 in the championship match over Moorhead.

Students were asked to problem-solve and answer questions related to construction in a live competition format. “Their success is a validation that we’re teaching relevant material in our program and meeting the needs of industry,” said Mike Bowman, construction program director.

UW-Stout is one of seven schools affiliated with the Minnesota Construction Association.

Bowman and Assistant Professor David Galetka were the team’s advisers.
