List of mascot names narrowed to four; voting under way

January 24, 2012

The list has been narrowed and voting is under way to determine the name of the University of Wisconsin-Stout mascot.

The finalists are Blaze, Harvey, Scorch and Beau. The names were chosen by the university from more than 100 names that were submitted during the past two weeks.

The winner will be the name that gets the most votes during an online poll at the Blue Devil mascot Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/uwstoutbluedevilmascot. Voting continues through Thursday, Feb. 9.

Voters will be restricted to one vote each. They do not need to be a fan of the mascot Facebook page in order to vote.

The winner will be announced Saturday, Feb. 11, between the basketball games against UW-Eau Claire at Johnson Fieldhouse. The women’s game begins at 4 p.m., and the men’s game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

The university hopes to publicly recognize, during the announcement, the person or people who submitted the winning name.

A 10-person committee, including five students, has overseen the naming process.

UW-Stout unveiled the school’s first official mascot Sept. 22 during a football game at Don and Nona Williams Stadium. It was created as a result of collaboration between students and administration. The SSA surveyed students about the idea and design. An art and design student, Megan Jurecki of Burlington, designed the prototype.

The mascot has appeared at numerous university and community events since its unveiling.
