Alumnus wins national DiscoverE Educator Award

June 12, 2013

A University of Wisconsin-Stout alumnus has received a prestigious national teaching award.

Steve Meyer was one of three teachers honored June 3 in Washington, D.C., with the DiscoverE Educator Award from the National Engineers Week Foundation.

He graduated in 2003 from UW-Stout with a Master of Science degree in industrial and technology education. He is a technology education teacher at Brillion High School in Brillion.

The other winners were Nicole Penn of Greensboro, N.C., and Anthony Williams of Omaha, Neb. Eight other teachers were named runners-up. To be eligible, nominees must teach full time in middle school or high school.

Steve MeyerMeyer believes all students should study engineering. "The first reason is that engineering can be used to help solve many of the world's problems. The students I am teaching now are the future engineers that will help solve these problems and create these opportunities."

The second reason is that all students can benefit from "thinking like an engineer," he said in a National Engineers Week Foundation news release announcing the award.

Meyer established a manufacturing engineering curriculum in Brillion, brings in speakers, arranges industry tours and internships, co-sponsors a STEM club and supports vehicle and invention competitions.

Meyer also has helped connect his school to the business community, leading to the addition of a $1.5 million technology and engineering education center. Each year he facilitates more than 50 tours for other schools, school boards, administrators and industry leaders to visit the program.

Award winners each received $2,000, a 3M digital projector and 3M gift pack of classroom supplies, along with a trip to Washington for the awards ceremony at the National Museum of the American Indian.

"Teachers play such an important role in society. They inform and inspire the next generation of engineers, which benefits all of us," said Charlene Wheeless, global manager of corporate affairs for Bechtel, one of the award's sponsors.
