Graphic design major also takes pride in work as videographer

With one semester to go before he graduates from University of Wisconsin-Stout, John Ewald is confident about his chances in the job market.

In December he'll receive a degree in graphic design and interactive media, which had 100 percent employment for new graduates in the university's most recent report

Ewald has made himself even more employable, however, through hard work. He will be able to include videography to the list of skills on his resume.

Although a digital cinema concentration was added to the major after Ewald began, he has become proficient at video production thanks largely to a love for the medium that dates to his preteen years.

John Ewald"I started doing video about 10 years ago as a hobby. About five years ago I realized that I could use my skills in a career path so I started taking it more seriously," said Ewald, of Maplewood, Minn. "I take pride in saying I can do graphic design and videography."

He took one class in film production and another in photography as part of his major.

Ewald works part-time on campus for University Marketing, and he recently produced two videos about other students in the School of Art and Design.

One video is about a class that traveled to Los Angeles last semester to present animation ideas to The Jim Henson Company. The other video is about the annual Senior Show put on by art students at the end of the spring semester.

The Henson video shows students in class working on their projects prior to going to Los Angeles. Ewald relied on contributed video footage from Los Angeles. He had more video from the classroom than the trip, although he wishes it had been the other way around.

"I went through tons of footage and had to crunch it all down to five or six minutes. That was the biggest challenge," Ewald said.

He worked with Assistant Professor Dave Beck, The Jim Henson Company and the University Marketing staff during the production and final editing processes.

Natalia Haywood is interviewed in the Senior Show video.The Henson and Senior Show videos will be used, in part, to promote UW-Stout's art programs to prospective students.

For the Senior Show video, Ewald interviewed four students whose senior projects were part of an annual School of Art and Design event held in mid-May throughout the Applied Arts Building.

This summer, in addition to taking courses at UW-Stout, Ewald has been doing wedding videography.

Student award and downtown videos

Two other videos recently were produced by UW-Stout students.

One video featured winners last spring of the Samuel E. Wood Medallion, the highest nonacademic honor at UW-Stout. The video was produced by Scott Fischer, from Rice Lake, who is majoring in entertainment design.

The Wood medallion is given annually to seniors who have been active in student activities, displayed leadership ability and excelled academically. Winners are chosen by a committee made up of students, faculty and staff.

In the video, medallion winners discuss what inspired them to get involved and what leadership means to them. They also offer advice to first-year students.

Also last spring, three students produced a video for Main Street of Menomonie to promote downtown attractions.

The student videographers are Robert Blais, of Princeton, Minn.; Carrie Moeger, of River Falls; and Lauren Offner, of Hudson.
