Telephone Operating Procedures

 

To reach University Information Dial 1122. Transfer callers to 1122 for further assistance.
To make a call within the Centrex system
Dial the last four digits of the number listed in the directory. To call a university extension from off campus, dial 715-232 plus the four digits of the listed extension.
To place an outgoing local call
Dial 9, the area code plus the desired seven-digit number.
To place a long distance call
Dial 8-1 area code plus the seven-digit telephone number. All long distance calls on university business are to be placed on the State Telephone System (STS). Person-to-person calls are not possible using STS. State work rules prohibit long distance personal calls.
To place non-STS, credit, collect, information or 800 calls
Dial 9-1 or 0 as required. Refer to city directory for directions and costs.
To transfer a call to another campus extension
Press the FLASH button (or depress the switch hook button momentarily). Listen for three beeps and dial tone. Dial the extension number to whom the call is to be transferred. When ringing is heard, hang up your receiver or stay on the line to announce the call. Hang up the receiver to complete the transfer. If you encounter a busy signal or a no answer, press the FLASH button twice in succession. This returns you to the original party.
To do a 3-Way conference call
Inform the first party of your intention to set up a 3-Way Call. Press the FLASH button (or depress the switch hook button momentarily). Listen for the three beeps and dial tone. Dial the extension number (or complete telephone number) of the third party. When the third party answers, press the FLASH button once to set up a 3-Way Conference Call.
Distinctive Ringing
When your phone rings in a cadence much like your home phone, the call is from off campus. When a long followed by a short ring is heard, the call is from another campus extension.
Call Forwarding

To activate call forwarding: Lift handset and listen for dial tone. Dial 47. Special dial tone is heard. Dial number to which calls are to be forwarded. Wait for confirmation tone. Hang up.

To cancel call forwarding: Lift handset and listen for dial tone. Dial 48. Listen for confirmation tone and hang up.
