Respondus LockDown Browser

What is Respondus LockDown Browser?

The Respondus LockDown Browser is a customized browser that increases the security of quiz delivery in Learn@UW-Stout. When students use the Respondus LockDown Browser to access a quiz, they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. Once a quiz is started, students are locked into it until it's submitted for grading.

How do I use it?

  • First, make sure all of your students have installed the Respondus LockDown Browser.  Note:  There is a link to install the Respondus LockDown Browser posted on the Learn@UW-Stout homepage within the Student Resources widget and on the Learn@UW-Stout - Students page.
  • Create a "practice" quiz for students to take so they get familiar with how the Respondus LockDown Browser works.  This will also ensure that all students have the Respondus LockDown Browser installed before taking an exam/quiz worth points.
  • To require the use of Respondus LockDown Browser on an exam/quiz:  open your course, click on Quizzes and then click on the LockDown Browser tab.  The Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard will open (it may take a few moments to load). Next, click on the edit button located to the left of each quiz), click Modify Settings, select the option to "Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam"  and click Save and Close.  Note: there are other settings available by clicking Advanced Settings.
  • When students launch the Respondus LockDown Browser, they will no longer be able to access anything on their computer until the quiz is submitted.

Additional Tips and Suggestions

  • If audio/video files are used in a quiz, the media player must be embedded in the question itself. This is the only way that students will have access to the control buttons, such as play, start, pause and stop.
  • Respondus LockDown Browser will maintain the "locked" testing environment even if a question contains a link to another web page (which opens another, secure browser window). However, all links that may appear on the new web page will be blocked by the browser, so be sure the content that students must see is available from the initial, linked page.
