Alan has 32 years of experience in education. In addition to teaching, Alan has contributed to building middle school programs, delivering staff development presentations, and coaching. Alan began teaching at French Settlement (LA) High School in January 1986. Alan taught mathematics, initiated an Algebra tutoring program, coached Girls’ Basketball, and started Track and Field and Cross Country programs. In 1988, Alan was selected as Teacher of the Year for the school.
In August 1988, Alan was hired by the U.S. Department of Defense to teach at Woodbridge American High School in the United Kingdom. In 1990, Alan volunteered to be the 7th Grade Math teacher in a Building a School Within a School project. The success of the project led to Alan’s selection as a regional staff developer for middle school programs. From 1992 to 1994, Alan trained American middle school teachers in the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Iceland.
Due to the realignment of U.S. bases in Europe, Alan moved to Chicksands Elementary/Middle School in 1993, received a sabbatical to Michigan State University in 1995, moved to Croughton American School in 1996, and moved to London Central High School in 2002.
While at Croughton American School, Alan began entering students in the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium-Europe. In 2002, Alan was selected as the JSHS-Europe Teacher of the Year as well as appointed to the JSHS-Europe Executive Board. From 2005 to 2007, Alan’s students won 10 of the 18 medals awarded in the middle school division of the Symposium.
In August 2007, Alan moved to Lakenheath High School where he continues to teach today. While at Lakenheath High School, Alan has successfully used online resources with students as well as developed project-based components for Geometry and Algebra II.
In 2016, Alan was selected as an Adjunct Instructor for the University of Wisconsin-Stout and teaches the Methods for Teaching Middle School Mathematics course online.
