C-NERVE is learning community at UW-Stout focused on providing students with an immersive research experiences in cognitive, social, and affective neuroscience. The C-NERVE learning community currently consists of faculty from more than five different departments and over 25 undergraduates.

During their time at Stout, students work as part of research teams on various research projects. As part of the research team, students are trained in psychophysiological methods, such as using brain waves, sweating related to arousal, heart rate, muscle tension, and eye movements to determine cognitive processes.

Students take part in additional activities designed to integrate them into a cohesive learning community and social network. These include:

  • Weekly lab meetings devoted to developing research skills.
  • Research presentations & invited lectures.
  • Discussions of current topics in cognitive neuroscience.
  • Social activities such as potlucks, picnics, and movie nights.
  • Career and academic mentoring.

Finally, during their senior year, C-NERVE students typically become the leader on one of the research teams. Their final task is to present the completed project at a professional conference at the end of the spring semester.

Over the last 7 years C-NERVE student students have:

  • Presented their research projects at more than 16 local, regional and national conferences.
  • Graduated with cumulative GPAs that were significantly higher than a non-C-NERVE comparison group.
  • Been more engaged than students in general, as measured by their scores on the National Student Survey on Engagement.
  • Scored at the 80th and 95th percentile on the cognitive and physiological components of the Major Field Test in Psychology
