Counseling Center continuing to serve students remotely

Compassionate care continued during pandemic while adhering to social distancing.

The main priority of the Counseling Center at the University of Wisconsin-Stout is its students and their continued care. The Counseling Center will continue to deliver free compassionate and confidential services, educational programs and resources for students.

However, in response to COVID-19 and the university’s transition to alternative learning methods, the center has modified its operations to provide services to students remotely.

Counseling Center Outreach Coordinator Samantha Hamann“We want to assure students that we are here for them during this time and we strive to continue to provide services to students remotely to benefit their mental health and well-being,” said licensed counselor and Outreach Coordinator Samantha Hamann.

Caring for students’ well-being remotely

Upon returning from spring break on Monday, March 23, all in-person counseling services transitioned to 30-minute phone consultations using Microsoft Teams. Students with existing appointments were emailed to set up virtual consultations.

The Counseling Center encourages students to email their individual counselors or call to schedule a consultation. The center can be reached at 715-232-2468, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Crisis and emergency support

The Counseling Center reminds students to call 911 if they are experiencing an emergency. Other mental health crisis options available 24/7 include:

Students can also find helpful tips and tricks to manage anxiety and depression symptoms at UW-Stout Wellness PROs and the Counseling Center Facebook page. And with the Well Track app, students can have an interactive self-help guide on their phones.

The center also encourages students to follow the weekly Mental Health Tips through Campus Life Today. It gives students new and specific tips to help them deal with struggles.

“We want students to know they are our number one priority and that we are still here to help support them now and throughout the rest of their semester,” Hamann said. “So far, students have been thankful for the services we are providing for them during this difficult time.
