CommonSpot basic training is required for anyone who needs editing access to university websites, with the exception of faculty and instructional staff, who already have editing access to their own faculty profile Web pages (see the link at left). 

Advance registration is required for CommonSpot training. We can't accommodate walk-ins because of the advance setup required for the hands-on portion of training. To register, click the link below for the training date you would like to attend.

If you need assistance with CommonSpot (CS) technical issues or content development, please email We will first work with you by email to resolve CS issues. If the issue cannot be resolve, the appropriate CS support staff will schedule a one-to-one meeting. 

Browser Issues

Most browsers have one or more issues with CommonSpot. Following are issues that have been reported along with the workaround if available. 

Google Chrome >>

In Chrome, you must to install PaperThin's Chrome Extension in order to use "Cut", "Copy" or "Paste" features through Rich Text Editor's toolbar buttons. To do this, open the Extensions page by clicking the far right icon next to the address bar in the browser (it says "Customize and control Google Chrome" on hover), then Tools > Extensions. Click the "Get more extensions" link and search for cs_paste_extension, then click the Add To Chrome button. After you install this extension, you need to restart your Chrome browser. When pasting in the text block, use the paste from clipboard icon instead of Ctrl-V to paste.

Firefox >>

The latest version of Firefox that is fully supported by CommonSpot is Firefox 17 ESR (Extended Support Release). Later versions may not allow you to save and submit changes in a Formatted Text Block and you may encounter other problems. If you are using an unsupported version, you can choose another supported browser like Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, or you can revert to an earlier version of Firefox. The steps to revert are:

  • Since this is an Extended Support Release of Firefox 24.0, go to
  • Click the Download: Windows or Mac OS X link, not one of the download links that are ads.
  • Once the file is downloaded, run it. It will "update" your Firefox back to 24.0
  • Next, go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Update and set it to "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them" rather than "Automatically install updates" which is the default setting. You will get notices to update Firefox to a later version, but you can ignore them until a later version is supported.

Internet Explorer >>

IE11 does work with CommonSpot in the default setup. To correct this, press F12. This should open a panel at the bottom of your browser window with a black bar on the left. Use the small arrow under the icons to scroll to the bottom of the list and click on the last icon, Emulation. In the Document mode drop-down, select 10 or lower; CommonSpot will not work in Edge mode. You should then be able to close the panel and login to CommonSpot.

Internet Explorer F12 Emulation change

You may experience trouble with your text disappearing in a Formatted Text Block element when working in Internet Explorer. If this happens, find the Maximize/Restore Down icon in the upper right corner next to the X. Maximizing the Formatted Text Block dialog should bring your text back when it disappears. You may occasionally have to switch this back and forth between Maximize and Restore Down

We have also seen problems when trying to work with tables in some versions of IE. The only recommendation here is to use another browser if you encounter this issue;

If you haven't changed your page layouts to the responsive layouts, please do so now. See the Power Point presentation on the Web Development site for slides that illustrate how to do this. If you have problems, send a note to 'webmaster,' or attend an Open Lab.

Marketing Consortiums

Web authors are invited to participate in the marketing consortium meetings, particularly if your site has information for current or prospective students or external audiences. Consortium meetings are campus networking events that cover marketing, graphic design, and social media as well as web topics, with plenty of open discussion, best practices and time for questions. [Consortium Blog]

We are currently on CommonSpot 9.0.1 which supports any of the following browser versions for authoring content:

  • Internet Explorer 9,10 and 11 (Windows) Note: under certain conditions, limitations in IE11 require that CommonSpot run IE 11in IE 10 mode
  • Firefox 24 ESR* and Firefox 17 ESR* version (Windows, Linux, Mac)
  • Latest versions of Safari (Mac) and Chrome** (Windows, Linux, Mac)
