Each summer, Stout Adventures offers a few trips specifically designed for incoming freshman. These trips are a great way to try something new, have fun and even meet a group of friends before you even step foot on campus! On past trips, participants have been know to create long lasting, and even life long friendships. No experience in kayaking, backpacking or even camping is necessary. Trips are fun for all skill levels. We just ask that participants be physically fit and ready for adventure!
Almost everything! We supply the trip leaders, camping/specialized equipment, camping & park fees, most food and transportation. Participants need only supply personal equipment (hiking boots, rain jacket, etc.) and food while traveling to/from the destination.
After a long summer of hard work, who wouldn't want to join the Stout Adventures crew as we travel north to the U.S./Canadian border for an epic week canoeing, hiking, and relaxing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness! The Boundary Waters is one of North America's most popular wilderness areas, known for its serenity, peacefulness, and contiguous wilderness lakes and forests. We will camp along beautiful lake shores, listen to the slowly crashing waves, native wildlife encounters (including moose, beaver, bears, and of course loons), and experience what the pioneers found in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Fee: $350

"The Freshman Wilderness Experience was a great lead up to college. I made a great group of friends and had many of my pre-college worries calmed by talking with my trip leaders. I would take this trip a thousand times over, it was such a great learning experience!"
"I'm usually not a wilderness person. Giving Stout Adventures a shot was one of the best things I've ever done. I met new people, explored the world in a new way, and learned how to camp!"
“This trip has been one that I will never forget. If any one part of the trip was taken away, it would not be complete. The friends that I made on this trip will be with me forever and all I can do is thank SA for that!”
“One of the coolest things I have ever done! Really glad I went!”
“I have had some amazing trips in my life but, Stout Adventures was for sure the best trip I have ever experienced!! Thank you Stout Adventures!!”
“Such a great freshman experience! This definitely helped me to get to know some people before I get to campus.”
“This trip was possibly the most fun I have ever had and one of the most awesome groups of people I could imagine.”
“I really enjoyed connecting with the members of Stout Adventures staff and the new incoming freshmen, it made me feel closer to the campus. The experience will make converting to college easier.”
“I was not experienced what-so-ever in any type of hiking or backpacking. It was an amazing opportunity that I would do again in a heartbeat. Not only did I get to see some pretty amazing views but made GREAT friends along the way :)!”
“I really enjoyed the FWE Apostle Islands Kayak Trip. It was an awesome way to meet fellow UW Stout classmates while experiencing something totally new. Even though I had never been on a wilderness trip before, my trip leaders made me feel safe, comfortable, and confident in the wilderness. I had a blast exploring sea caves, swimming in crystal clear Lake Superior water, and exploring the Apostle Islands. This experience was unforgettable and it is definitely something I would recommend to future UW Stout students.”
“I had such an amazing time meeting new people and stepping out of my comfort zone. As soon as I got home and took a shower I was ready to get back out there! It was a great experience and makes me that much more excited to attend Stout and experience more in college!”
