About the Program
Stout Adventures offer a variety of trips and workshops. Trips are open to all Stout students, faculty and staff as well as the community. The trips emphasize responsible behavior in the outdoors, teamwork and fun! Trips run within a cooperative adventure philosophy as opposed to a guide service. In a guided trip the goal is to fulfill the needs and desires of the participants and alleviate them of reproducibilities and duties like setting up a tent or cooking dinner. Under the cooperative adventure philosophy participants are expected to assume responsibilities on trips. These duties depend in part on the participant’s experience and ability. The more experienced or able the participant, the more that individual may be able to contribute to the group. Participants are expected to take part in much of the decision making and contribute to the group as a whole.
The hope is that cooperative adventure trips provide a more rewarding educational experience because of the active role participants take. The leader’s role is to act as the group facilitator. They bring the group together for meetings, provide suggestions, and summarize options. The leader does not make decisions for the participants, but helps participants help themselves. In emergency situations involving individual or group safety or when the leader clearly has more experience, the trip leaders have the right to veto decisions.
General Information
Trips and Clinics are available to UW-Stout students as well as to all community members!
We supply camping and specialized equipment for most of our trips and generally pay for all camping and park entry fees and permits. Participants need only supply personal equipment and food. Suppers are usually done in a group format. For river trips, the cost also includes the shuttle fees. Most, but not all trips are instructional and are geared toward persons with little or no experience. You do not need a partner for any of our trips. If you want to find out about a particular trip, you can call the Stout Adventures office or come to the pre-trip meeting. Pre-trip meetings are mandatory because of the essential information that you acquire. If you miss a pre-trip meeting without making arrangements with the trip leader, we reserve the right to remove you from the trip and you forfeit your deposit.
For more information contact Stout Adventures.
Pricing
Our trips are run on a non-profit basis. Many administrative costs are covered by University Recreation through student fees. This is why costs for community participants are slightly higher than students. Our trip and rental fees pay for transportation, staff training, advertising, trip planning, most camping and lodging fees, and the purchase, maintenance, and repair of equipment. The fees we charge do not pay for the value of the time put in by our volunteer trip leaders and assistants. In exchange for keeping our prices low, we expect all participants to make an effort to keep activities safe and enjoyable. This requires that you recognize that you are part of a group and that you will be willing and open to participate as a team member. That is why Stout Adventures calls itself a "cooperative adventure" program.
Registration
You may register for Stout Adventures trips in the Sports & Fitness Center, Room 56 during open hours of operation. To register, you must pay for half of the fees as a deposit. The remainder is due at or before the pre-trip meeting. For trips and workshops that cost less than $40, the deposit is equal to the trip cost. Trip reservations are taken on a strict first come first serve basis. Mailing in registration does not guarantee a spot. Most activities can only accommodate a limited amount of people, so call for availability when an activity is approaching its registration deadline.
Sign-up Form
Each trip will require you to sign a trips and clinics sign-up form you can print and fill it out, but you will have to return it to the Stout Adventures office to complete the registration process.
