Doug Mell

Director of University Communications

Mell directs University Communications, which provides information for the public on UW-Stout's special mission in the UW System. The office works with the news media to develop stories on UW-Stout events, its student faculty and staff. The office helps develop marketing materials, advertising and campuswide internal publications. The office is responsible for liaison activities with the legislature, other state and local officials and the community.

 

Laura Short

Writer

Short performs research and writes information about the university for marketing materials, annual reports, campuswide internal communications, and external communications with the community, news media and legislature. She also develops stories for local, state and national news media.

 

Melissa Castillo

Operations Program Associate

Castillo provides overall program support for University Communications. She is responsible for the department's budget, purchasing and other financial matters. She provides support for the other department employees, including the director. This support includes preparation of reports, memos, news releases, and serving as the afternoon receptionist. She also provides editorial support for the department's products.

 

Don Steffen

University Editor

As UW-Stout’s University Editor, Steffen works closely with other departments to update the content of campuswide publications, including undergraduate and graduate course bulletins, admissions marketing materials and academic program Web sites. As university editor, he also assists university departments with their publication needs, though priority is given to campuswide publications.

 

Hannah Flom

Communications Specialist

Flom is responsible for the preparation of Stout Today, the daily e-mail report sent to all faculty and staff, and also prepares the weekly Community News. Flom also provides other support for department employees and is the morning receptionist. Flom also handles the hometown news service, which provides news releases to the hometown newspapers of students who have graduated, received chancellor's awards or scholarships, or who have participated in other special events or activities.
