University of Wisconsin - Stout

University Communications provides hometown news service for students. This service reports information to the student’s hometown newspaper concerning Chancellor’s Award recognition, graduation and awarding of scholarships. The office also assists other units on campus by reporting special projects such as the STEPS program, co-ops and internships.

Stout works in conjunction with The Link, a national news service located in Iowa City, Iowa.

Using data furnished by the Registration and Records Office, staff in University Communications forwards appropriate data for publication in newspapers throughout the country to The Link. The newspapers selected for a particular student are based on the zip code of the home address entered by Registration and Records upon enrollment

Selecting a Different Town for News Releases

In some circumstances, students, or their parents, may wish to have news releases sent to a paper other than their local home paper. In these cases, the student will need to update the news release field in the Stout database. This can also be done by contacting the Registration and Records Office in person.

If students do not intentionally indicate a different city and zip code, news releases will be sent to the newspapers serving the home address.

Only the student is able to make this change. Also, only one city and zip code can be used for news releases.

Reporting Problems

If students think their local paper should have reported information about some received recognition and they failed to see it, they may call 715-232-2381. Staff will be able to tell the student the date that the information was sent to The Link, and the papers that received the press release. The office is not able to require a newspaper to print the information supplied to them, but will do the research necessary to ensure that correct data was sent. Students and family members need to be patient and understand that it is at the newspaper’s discretion as to when the information appears.
