My goal is to help students see the relationships between concepts within a discrete body of knowledge and subsequently, be able to identify the core understandings that they, as teachers, should aspire to construct in the minds of learners.
To accomplish this goal, I will be asking students to develop concepts maps that will make the noting of relationships between concepts more overt. Towards that end, I have developed several concepts maps that can be used as examples in class. I have also identified the chunks of content that I will ask students to address. Lastly, I have developed a tool that can be used to evaluate the concept maps that the students will develop.
The examples, the topics, and the assessment tool were pilot tested with an analogous class last semester. Everything is ready for full implementation when the class is reaches the point where we begin to address the selection and organization of content for lessons.
