Scholarship of Teaching Project
April 3, 2003
Call for Participants and Description of
Project
Is there an intriguing "problem"
in your teaching? Would you like to investigate what it means to learn in your
class?
Have you been thinking of trying out a new
classroom assignment or project? Are you looking for ideas on how to use
laptops in the classroom?
The Teaching and Learning Center
will facilitate a $1000 per person scholarship of teaching project during
2003-04. You are invited to apply. Fifteen applications will be funded. The
deadline for the application is Friday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
Payment
Each participant will receive $1000 to be
used for travel, services or supplies. $250 will be allocated in September,
$250 in January, and $500 on the completion of a final report.
Description of the Project
The goal of this project is to provide a
venue that allows teachers (faculty and staff) to conduct a reflective
practice/scholarship of teaching investigation. Teachers are asked to identify
a problem or issue in teaching and learning in one or more of their classes
that they feel passionate about. The project itself is to investigate that
problem or issue in such a way that a conclusion can be formed and disseminated
to the Stout community.
Each participant will join a small group of
other teachers interested in the same problem or issue. This group will meet
several times during the course of the project. Topics suggested in a recent
survey of Stout teachers include
- Critical thinking
- Motivation
- Use of multiculturalism as a basis for learning
- Use of small groups
- Use of laptops
- Assessment
- Coverage vs. depth
- Development of the effectiveness of a teaching technique
- Investigation of a learning strategy.
