Enrollment

Admission Requirements

Registration for Summer Session classes is not permitted without official acceptance to the university for first-time applicants.

Undergraduates who plan to attend only Summer Session, need only complete the Summer Session Registration Form. High school and college transcripts are not required.

Undergraduates who plan to attend UW-Stout for the first time and wish to be considered for admission to the fall term, must apply for admission to the university.

To accelerate the process, complete the entire Summer Session Registration form and mail it with all college and high school transcripts, to the Director of Admissions, 124 Bowman Hall, UW-Stout, Menomonie, WI 54751.

New Freshmen are likely to be admitted if they rank in the top 50% of their graduating class (a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or greater will only be used if your high shcool does not rank); OR receive a composite ACT score of 22 or greater (or SAT equivalent).  The Applied Mathematics & Computer Science, Applied Science and Manufacturing Engineering programs have slightly higher requirements for admission. A minimum of 17 high school college preparatory credits is required. See the Undergraduate Bulletin for full details. Adult students with a GED equivalency diploma (an average score of at least 50 is required) may be admitted. Other adults older than 21 years may be considered individually.

Students who plan to continue in the fall term must submit high school transcripts, ACT or SAT scores and a $35 application fee with the completed Summer Session Registration Form for admission.

Transfer students must provide an official transcript from each post-secondary school they have attended. High school transcripts are also necessary if they have not completed a two-year degree. The $35 application fee is also necessary if the student is not transferring directly from one of the two-year UW schools. In order to be admitted in good standing, applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 or greater. Education major applicants must have a grade point average of 2.75 or greater. The Applied Science and Manufacturing Engineering programs have slightly higher requirements for admission.

High school special (non-degree) students must have their application for admission signed by one parent or guardian and a high school guidance counselor or principal. Transcript and fee are not required.

Graduate students enrolling for graduate credit for the first time must be accepted to the Graduate School as a degree student or as a graduate special (non-degree) student before registration for classes can be completed. Graduate application forms may be obtained by contacting the Graduate School, 130 Bowman Hall, UW-Stout, Menomonie, WI, 54751, 715/232-2211; or online.

Application for Degree

Undergraduate students completing the requirements for graduation are required to submit an Application for Degree. Diplomas will be ordered. However, due to the printer’s schedule, we cannot assure delivery by the end of Summer Session. Diplomas will be mailed to the address provided on the Application for Degree form. The application can be completed online.

Graduate students completing the requirements for graduation must submit a Graduate Application for Degree to the Graduate School Office. An evaluation of the student’s record will not begin until this application is on file at the Graduate School. Graduation information, such as due dates and other requirements, is available online. Diplomas will be mailed two to three months after the end of the term and will be sent to the address on the Graduate Application for Degree.

Multiple Enrollment

Students enrolled at more than one UW institution during the Summer Session may combine credits to determine their full-time status for fee assessment. It is the student’s responsibility to present evidence of fees paid and credits carried. Fees will then be assessed by the second institution at a rate not to exceed full time. This does not apply to students under the per-credit (e-Scholar) model.

Credit Load

The maximum credit load for summer school for undergraduate students is one credit per week during the session(s) for which the student is enrolled. On-campus and continuing education courses combined cannot exceed the one credit per week load limit. Courses in which the number of credits equals the number of weeks the course is offered precludes enrollment for additional credits during that time. Requests for an exception in special circumstances should be transmitted to the appropriate program director.

Graduate students may enroll for no more than 10 credits during the 10 week summer session. Graduate policy allows one credit overload, with program director signature on a credit overload card.

Independent Study

Independent study applications may be picked up in the assistant dean’s office of the college/school in which the study is to be pursued. These applications must be completed, approved and turned in to the Registration and Records Office no later than July 3, 2008.

Independent study registrations received after this date may be processed for the fall semester.

Cooperative Education Registration

Students accepted for a co-op must report to the Career Services Office for application materials. After completing the Application, the student turns in the Application to the Career Services office where they will receive a signed Registration form. The signed Registration form should then be taken to the Registration and Records Office.  The Registration and Records Office will refuse any co-op registration not bearing a signature from the Career Services Office.

Audit

Students interested in auditing courses must receive prior approval from the instructor of the class. It is the responsibility of students to seek permission from the instructor and inform the Registration and Records Office they are auditing the class. The instructor is to indicate audit on the grade roster instead of assigning a grade. A Wisconsin resident younger than age 60 will be charged approximately 30 percent of the normal per credit academic fee. Wisconsin residents age 60 or older (as of the first day of classes) will have per credit academic fee waived. A Minnesota resident approved for reciprocity will be charged 30 percent of the normal per credit Minnesota reciprocity fee. Non-residents will be charged 50 percent of the normal, non-resident per credit academic fee.

Any special costs for course instruction other than normal tuition will be assessed to auditors.

A course which is audited may not be retaken for credit.
Degree-seeking students also taking audit courses will be assessed the normal per credit academic fee/non-resident academic fee. Audit fees will be removed for all disabled Wisconsin residents receiving disability benefits under either the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDDI) or Supplemental Security Income Program (SSI).

Graduate courses which are taken for audit require the same procedures for registration and admission as the courses taken for credit. Audited courses are included in determining maximum credit load.

The complete audit policy is printed in the year-round Course Timetables.

Graduate Policy Exceptions

Requests for exception to Graduate School Policy should be submitted using the Graduate Policy Exception Request form and will be reviewed by the Committee on Exceptions to Graduate School Policy. The request should be made well in advance of the need for a decision. Since the committee meets on an irregular basis, contact the Graduate School Office (715/232-2211) for the next meeting date. The request should include a rationale that clearly states the compelling reasons justifying the exception request, and must be channeled through the program director for recommendation and signature. Notification of the committee’s action is sent to the student by the Graduate School (copy to program director) via the student's Stout e-mail address.
