Costs and Finances
Wisconsin Residency
Although you are not a resident of Wisconsin, you may qualify for resident
fees if you are:
- A dependent whose parents are divorced or separated if one or both
parents are residents of Wisconsin.
- A member of the regular Armed Forces stationed in Wisconsin for reasons
other than to obtain an education (spouses and children also qualify),
or a person engaged in an alternative service (i.e. Vista)
in Wisconsin. National Guard does not qualify.
- A graduate of a Wisconsin high school whose parents have been bona
fide residents of Wisconsin 12 months prior to the beginning of any
session. If the last surviving parent was a bona fide Wisconsin resident
12 months before death, the same is true.
- Individuals (and their spouses and dependents) who have
been relocated to Wisconsin for business purposes by their current employer
and who remain continuously employed full time by that employer.
- Individuals (and their spouses and dependents) who have
accepted their current full-time employment with a new employer before
moving here and before applying for admission to an institution in the
UW System. In addition, such individuals must have moved to Wisconsin
for business purposes and must be continuously employed full time by
that employer. These individuals must demonstrate intent to establish
and maintain a permanent home in Wisconsin according to criteria specified
in section 36.27(2) (e), Wisconsin Statutes.
Questions regarding residency will be considered by the appropriate director
of admissions. Undergraduate students should call 715/232-1411, and graduate
students should call 715/232-1322.
Minnesota Reciprocity
To be covered by the Minnesota-Wisconsin reciprocity agreement, Minnesota
residents must apply to the Minnesota Higher Education Services Office
(MHESO) before the end of the Summer Session. Coverage for Stout
students who have been covered by the agreement will continue through
the Summer Session. Non-Stout students who were covered by reciprocity
elsewhere must notify MHESO that they are attending Stout for the summer.
If you have any questions about reciprocity, or would like to apply,
please go to:

Financial Aid
For financial aid purposes, Summer Session is classified as an add-on
session to the previous academic year. Student eligibility to receive
any type of assistance or other student resources for summer studies is
generally based upon previous academic year program limits. Financial
assistance or other student resources available in the summer would be
the unused portion of the student’s previous academic year award.
Since the financial aid award is determined by financial need, students
must first file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid for the previous
academic year.
Students requesting financial aid for summer session attendance must
complete a 2007–2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
by May 1, 2008 and a UW-Stout Financial Aid Application for Summer (available
in March 1, 2008) by June 1. All materials should be submitted as soon after the
application forms are available as possible.
Financial aid eligibility for summer session is determined by the official
enrollment status of a student for the term. Students must maintain this
enrollment status throughout the summer. Disbursement information will
be available with summer session award letters.
2007–2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
is available online at
www.fafsa.ed.gov Additional information about summer aid and the
Financial Aid Application for Summer will be available March 1 at
www.uwstout.edu/fin aid
(select forms).
Fee Payment
The Office of Student Business Services will begin accepting payment
for Summer Session courses after you register for them. Students are encouraged
to pay fees by mail. Fee payment in person should be done during class
breaks. Payment must be received within five days of the beginning of
the session. There is no partial payment plan for Summer Session. Registration
is complete when the registration form is turned in to the Registration
and Records office (online, by mail or in person) and all fees
are paid. Early registration and prepayment is encouraged.
If a student who has received federal financial aid funds (other
than College Work Study) withdraws, drops out, or is expelled during
summer session, all of the institutional refund, up to the total aid received,
must be returned to the aid programs in accordance with established allocation
priorities. The student may be required to repay a portion of the aid
funds other than CWS, Federal Stafford, or Federal Plus which were disbursed
to the student for non-institutional costs. Contact the Office of Student
Business Services for individual questions and samples of the Federal
Refund/Repayment calculation.
UW-Stout participates in the redemption program for State of Wisconsin
Education Savings Bonds. Presentation of a bond for redemption will not
defer assessment of finance charge or amounts owed the university. Please
keep in mind that the process established by the State Building Commission
requires at least one month to complete the redemption of the bond.
Refunds from Financial Aid
Federal and state financial aid will be credited directly to your summer
account (bill). If there is other aid in the
form of paper checks (such as
non-EFT loans), you will need to come in (with
ID card) to endorse the check so it may be applied to your
account. (Note: You must carry
the required credit load at the time of disbursement.)
Notice will be e-mailed at the time funds are credited to the account.
All university charges will be deducted from the funds prior to any
refund to the student.
Refunds will be automatically sent to your StoutOne Account generally
2-3 business days after your financial aid has been applied to your
account.
You must go to online
to activate your new ID card and choose how you wish to receive your refund(s).
Subsequent changes made to the course schedule will likely result in additional
charges or refunds. Any refunds that occur as a result of schedule changes
will be automatically sent to Your StoutOne account.
Fee Schedule
2008 Summer
Tuition Rates
Fees are due in full by the end of the first week. The Board of Regents
reserves the right to change tuition and fees without published notice.
Dual-Level Students are UW-Stout seniors within their
last year or within 30 credits of graduation who have less than a full
credit load to complete their bachelor’s degree, and who wish to
get a head start on graduate work. You must apply and be accepted to the
Graduate School as a dual level student prior to registering for graduate
courses. Dual level students may earn no more than nine graduate credits
under this status, with no more than six graduate credits per semester
and no more than three graduate credits during summer session. Students
taking undergraduate courses as deficiencies or for personal benefit along
with graduate courses are not dual level students. Dual level students
will be charged for courses at the course level. Fees are subject to change
by the Board of Regents without published notice.
Fee Refunds
Refunds for fees paid are prorated according to the length of the course
and the number of days a course has been in session. If you plan to withdraw
from a particular course, do so immediately. A single day can make a major
difference in the amount of refund. A complete refund schedule is available
at the Business Office, 125 Administration Building.
Withdrawals
A student who has attended class
and/or paid fees but who wishes to withdraw from school must complete a
withdrawal form in the Registration and Records Office. A student who
registers for courses, but never attends, is responsible for canceling
registration prior to the beginning of the course by notifying the
Registration & Records office in writing to 109 Bowman Hall or
registrar@uwstout.edu.
Questions can be directed to 715-232-1660 or 715-232-1655. Improper cancellation or withdrawal can result in
fees and/or a grade of “F”, and/or the repayment of financial aid
received.
If you wish to withdraw from a course
once it has begun, a withdrawal form must be completed in the Registration and Records Office in
Room 109 Bowman Hall, or by calling 715/232-1092 or -1660 to complete
the process. The official date of withdrawal for refund purposes is the
date the withdrawal form is completed and delivered to the Registration and
Records Office.
Repayment of Financial Aid if You Withdraw If you withdraw
from the university before 60 percent of the semester has been completed,
the university is required to determine the amount of your federal and
state financial
aid (other than work-study) that must be returned. The amount
of aid you may keep when you withdraw is in direct proportion to the length
of time you remained enrolled during the semester. You may owe a repayment
of your financial aid even though you are not eligible for a refund of
your tuition. The university will notify you of the dollar amount owed.
A $50 administrative fee (withdrawal fee) during the first week
or a $100 fee during the second week or 5 percent of institutional charges,
whichever is less, will be assessed for processing the withdrawal.
Examples of refund calculation are available in the Student Business
Services Office. Actual, individualized calculations of required repayment
will be done in the Business Office.
Unpaid Obligations
The university views failure to meet financial obligations as a very
serious matter. Therefore, unpaid obligations of any nature due and payable
by students to UW-Stout constitute valid reason for suspension. This includes
all items such as library fines, assessments for damages in laboratories,
residence hall fees, and others. The university will place a hold on any
further registrations and will not issue transcripts until the account
is brought up to date. Collection costs will be assessed on any unpaid
charges owed to the university. Students will be responsible for these
fees based on full cost recovery.
