ATTENTION STUDENTS-----
UW-Stout students who are experiencing influenza like symptoms should call (715) 232-1314 press option #2 to receive guidance and care instructions. Students where H1N1 is highly suspected may be referred to Red Cedar Medical Center. It is very important that students identify themselves as a possible influenza cases upon check in.
Staying home when you’re sick with the flu (except for medical care) is the best thing you can do for your own recovery and to help limit spread of disease to others. As with any illness, students should communicate promptly with their professors and the Dean of Students Office (in the case of multiple day absences), if they are going to miss class, an exam or a deadline due to influenza symptoms.
Staying Healthy
Student Health Services recommends taking the following everyday actions to stay healthy
-- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
When tissues are not handy, covering your cough or sneeze with the fabric of your sleeve is an effective way to help contain germs. The fabric of a sleeve is usually a place where germs will dessicate and die.
-- Wash your hands often – and thoroughly – with soap and warm water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.
-- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. Germs can also be transmitted from certain surfaces that are used and shared by individuals. Items such as keyboards, doorknobs and telephones – if frequently used by multiple people – can be sources of germs. Again, get in the habit of frequent hand-washing if you use these items.
-- “Social distancing” is a concept that many physicians and public health experts advise during disease outbreaks. Social distancing means being conscious of your personal space and trying to minimize contact with other individuals, in order to limit the spread of viruses such as colds or influenza. Social distancing does not preclude caring for family members, teaching and learning, or most workplace activities. Individuals still interact with each other, but they limit handshakes, or other forms of touching and sharing that might spread germs.

Many of you are aware that human cases of swine flu (H1N1) virus infection have been identified in the United States, and that five probable cases have been identified in Wisconsin. Earlier today, the Governor issued an executive order declaring a public health emergency. Given that this situation is rapidly developing and changing daily, it is important to provide you accurate information.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services through its Public Health Officer, Dr. Seth Foldy, has been providing information intended to protect citizens from being exposed to the virus, as well as other information.
