Ten members of UW-Stout’s campus-wide programming board, Blue Devil Productions (BDP), attended the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) Northern Plains Regional Conference April 4-7 in St. Paul, MN. The conference links education to the entertainment industry. Student program boards from over 75 schools (9 states and 2 provinces of Canada) were able to see 40 showcasing acts, meet with over 70 entertainment agencies, and attend 35 educational sessions. The goal of the weekend is to give schools an opportunity to book acts for the upcoming school year and help them learn how to be better campus programmers.
During the conference a design and graphics competition is held. Student programmers enter their best work from the current school year to see how their efforts stand up against their regional peers. Blue Devil Productions returned to campus with three first-place honors and two honorable mentions:
“We are so proud of our designers and thrilled by the number of categories that the student’s designs were recognized in,” said Emily Ascher, the staff advisor to Blue Devil Productions. She added, “In addition to the formal recognition, it is was wonderful to see our students networking and making connections with students from other institutions who wanted to learn more about the design programs and student experiences here at UW-Stout. We have a great caliber of students on our team who are very proud of their talents and their home institution.”
In a related story, two members of the Memorial Student Center’s Event Services technical team were selected to serve on the Student Stage Crew at the NACA Northern Plains Conference. Vinny Vandenplas (Senior, Technology Education, Green Bay, WI) and Dana McKinnon (Senior, Technology Education, Eagan, MN) were a part of every aspect of the showcase production for the conference, including set-up, sound & light check, on-stage production, and the eventual tear-down and load out of the equipment at the conclusion of the conference. “It was a great opportunity for professional networking and also a ton of great entertainment,” said Vandenplas., “Really, it was the most fun at a conference, ever!”
