Why do I get an error message every time I try to login with an FTP program?
If you have received an email from the web coordinator, telling you that your access is set up, and you still cannot upload your files using the instructions in the email, contact the web coordinator (Barbara Button; buttonb). The hostname/address should be stoutinfo.uwstout.edu. Sign in using your regular email username and password. Your username should be in this format: uwstout-mail/username. Both the hostname/address and your username should be all in lowercase letters.
How do I upload my organizations web page?
The Web Developer's Resources page has links to tutorials for using WS FTP (PC), for using Fetch (Macintosh), and for setting up your site in Dreamweaver. The host name/address is stoutinfo.uwstout.edu. The rest of the information you need will be provided by email when you sign up for your organization's web space.
Why am I getting a "404 - File Not Found" error when I try to look at one of my pages?
This error occurs when:
- the filename in the link doesn't match the filename on the server
- the file in the link doesn't exist on the server
- the file hasn't yet been uploaded
- the file was uploaded to the wrong folder
- there is a space or other special character in the file name
- the file is otherwise not where the link says it is
To trouble-shoot the problem, log onto the web server and look in your folder to see if the file is there. If it's not there, you should upload it and try it again; if the file is there, you probably have made a mistake in creating the link to the file (names do not match). A link can be corrected by opening up the originating file in your web authoring software and checking the link for accuracy.
I am replacing the person that used to work on the organization web page, what should I do?
Complete the Student Organization Web Site Request Form [PDF - requires free Acrobat Reader] and return it to Room 212, Millennium Hall. When this form is submitted, your web server access can be established.
Can I use the Stout Logo on the organization web site?
Organizations can use the logo on their web site. Before using the Stout logo, you should visit the Stout Logo page.
Can I use scripts, guestbooks or hit counters?
Guestbooks and hit counters are not available. There is a generic form processor on the server. Your organization can use this to set up a web form.
