Colleges Against Cancer

“American Cancer Society Colleges Against Cancer is a nationwide collaboration of college students, faculty, and staff dedicated to eliminating cancer by initiating and supporting programs of the American Cancer Society in college communities.”

Above is the mission statement for the Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) program. CAC is a program designed by and administered by college students from across the country and is supported and funded by the American Cancer Society.  CAC allows students and staff to work through different channels to eliminate cancer.  These channels are their strategic directions – advocacy, cancer control and prevention programs, Relay for Life and fundraising activities, and survivorship.

Advocacy

CAC local chapters will adapt American Cancer Society advocacy initiatives to the college environment, promote them on campus, and help coordinate nationwide advocacy efforts. Examples of activities include anti-tobacco activities in communities and contacting elected leaders through the American Cancer Society Action Network Program.

Cancer Control

CAC local chapters will spread the word on college campuses about cancer prevention, early detection, and healthy lifestyles.  Educational topics include nutrition and physical activity, smoke-free living, sun safety, and other health issues and American Cancer Society programs.

Relay for Life

Relay offers everyone an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.  Teams of people camp out and take turn walking or running around a track.  Each team is asked to raise contributions to support the Society’s mission to fight cancer, and to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.  Relays are an overnight event up to 24 hours in length.  Please see Relay for Life 2005 article for more details.

Survivorship

Students in CAC will get involved with cancer patients and survivors on a local level, helping to increase access to programs that can improve quality of life such as support services and community events.
