What is STEPS for Girls?

Science, Technology and Engineering Preview at UW-Stout for Girls (STEPS) is a one-week introduction to the exciting world of science, technology and engineering. Campers participate in a variety of workshops that give them hands-on experience with high-tech equipment and processes. Outstanding professors from the Engineering, Technology, and Sciences programs at UW-Stout teach the workshops. Campers also enjoy activities such as bowling, swimming, a pizza party, and karaoke. Camp counselors will supervise all activities.

An example of program activities during the week includes designing, manufacturing, and piloting a radio controlled boat. Campers will photograph and write articles about their activities that they will combine at the end of the week to create a Newsletter in our modern Graphic Communications Laboratory.

Please review the STEPS Brochure for additional information: PDF (Page 1-2)

The camp is designed for girls between their 6th and 7th grade in school. Campers must have the consent of their parent(s) or guardians to enroll. An interest in (STEM) Science, Technology, Engineering & Math is a plus, but not required.

Advanced STEPS

We hope to resume Advanced STEPS in the summer of 2013.

Location

University of Wisconsin- Stout campus in Menomonie, Wisconsin

Housing

A residence hall room, on a secure floor, is provided for the entire week (two campers per room). Counselors stay with the campers in a ratio of one counselor and one junior counselor for every ten girls. The camp provides all meals. Coin operated laundry facilities are available in the residence hall.

Supervision

The 40 campers each week are organized into four 10-girl teams, each led by a female counselor and a junior counselor. Several women students work as assistants in the laboratories.

Camp Cost

Through the generosity of our sponsors, we are able to offer a reduced tuition of $450 per camper.  We set aside 25% of the camp enrollment for campers eligible for free and reduced lunch (FRL) at a rate of $100 per camper.  Limited full scholarships are also available for FRL camp participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
