Lab Assistant Job Description

We want to invite you to reconnect with the STEPS program as a Lab Assistant.  Please review the following information about the responsibilities and benefits of joining our staff to work with 7th grade girls from diverse backgrounds. 

First and foremost, a STEPS Lab Assistant must be highly interested in working with middle-school girls, college-age counselors and university faculty.  The job entails assisting instructors with preparation and clean-up, assisting campers with laboratory tasks and making sure campers are safe as they accomplish class activities.

Being a STEPS Lab Assistant is a strenuous job that requires a mature individual with patience, high energy and a desire to learn, lead and mentor girls.  Lab Assistants live on campus with other faculty and staff for two or four of the five-day sessions at camp.  This job is incredibly rewarding for the individual who wants to participate in engineering activities, while changing the lives of many girls.  Preference will be given to applicants who show sustained interest in science, technology and engineering and plan to pursue technical careers.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating a welcoming, positive camp atmosphere for all campers and being a responsible mentor to 40 girls throughout the five-day sessions.
  • Assisting in facilitation of camp activities.
  • Participating and assisting in execution of nightly activities.
  • Participating as part of the STEPS faculty/staff team.
  • Being patient, flexible and willing to have fun while working with the camp's diverse population.

Qualifications:

  • Be self-motivated and enjoy working with middle-school girls.
  • Must be entering 11th or 12th grade.
  • Lab Assistants must have attended the STEPS program as a 7th grader and demonstrate sustained interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Benefits:

  • Compensation of $400.00 for two, five-day sessions.
  • Free room and board for each session (Sunday-Thursday each week*).

*Please note that you are responsible for transportation to and from UW-Stout for each session.  If you live far from Menomonie, you will need to consider how you will travel to campus.  Housing is not  provided on Thursday, Friday or Saturday night between sessions.  You will be able to leave items in your room between sessions.  More information about orientation, training and check-in/check-out times will be provided after the Lab Assistants are selected.
