Junior Counselor Job Description

We want to invite you to reconnect with the STEPS program as a Junior Counselor.  Please review the following information about the responsibilities and benefits of joining our staff to work with 7th grade girls from diverse backgrounds. 

First and foremost, a STEPS Junior Counselor must be highly interested in working with middle-school girls and college-age counselors.  The job entails attending classes with campers, assisting with counselor-run activities, stepping in as a lead to give the counselors breaks, and making sure campers are safe getting from class to class without losing momentum. Being a STEPS Junior Counselor is a strenuous job that requires a mature individual with patience, high energy and a desire to design activities on the go.  Junior Counselors will live on campus with the campers for one, five-day session of camp.  This job is incredibly rewarding for the individual who wants to participate in engineering activities, while changing the lives of many girls.  Preference will be given to applicants who show sustained interest in science, technology and engineering and plan to pursue technical careers. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Creating a welcoming, positive camp atmosphere for all campers and being a responsible mentor to 10 girls throughout the five-day session.
  • Assisting in facilitation of camp activities.
  • Participating and assisting in execution of nightly activities.
  • Participating as part of the STEPS counseling team.
  • Being patient, flexible and willing to have fun while working with the camp's diverse population.

Qualifications: 

  • Be self-motivated and enjoy working with middle-school girls.
  • Must be entering 10th grade.
  • Junior Counselors must have attended the STEPS program as a 7th grader and demonstrate sustained interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
